I'm not blaming refs exactly. Fouls were 3-5 Iowa, Iowa state 1st half. Basically 3-double bonus in the 2nd when Iowa had the lead.
We keep talking about this Phantom. Maybe Fran should just go into the locker room with under 4 minutes to go and let one of the assistants coach. This Gessell clear out stuff is getting old. Not to mention it doesn't work.
It was even a tough 3 at that. MG held the ball way too long and so Uthoff is left shooting an off balance 3. He couldn't drive the ball to the bucket because MG was playing his dribble game.
You mean don't clog up the middle of the court with your big slow 7ft post on the inbound?
He had several chances to take shots in the 2nd half and passed. He had 24 and 30 in the first half of his last two games and finished with 27 and 32. I haven't been this pissed after a game in a long time. Our strategy of giving our worst clutch shooters all the shots in clutch time is beyond frustrating. I like Fran but he sucks at knowing when a time out would be beneficial.
Sorry, how is that on Fran? You have a senior/junior lineup, you'd expect them to be able to execute a little bit

I've said it for 2 years. MG is a nice backup PG on a very good team. He's not a starter. I understand he's the best Iowa has but that's FM fault for not recruiting a PG.
Fran should have used his timeout to set up a better shot than Uthoff from 25'
Fran has a history of favorites and refusing to give up on people that should sit much more. Look at last year. And for Mike, just about every game we have blown late, he has been instrumental in the blowing. Not a bad player and capable of doing good things but overall a mediocre high D 1 point guard.
It's amazing he continues to do the same thing when it doesn't work. Ugh. I'd love to see how many games Iowa has blown with halftime leads, or double digit leads under Fran's reign. I'd wager Fran has more losses (or worst win percentage) of all but 1 or 2 B1G coaches. Horrible.
I don't know why Gesell feels the need to turn into a scorer as the half closes when you have guys who have 32 and 17(?) points flanking you. Just run what works. He's going against somebody who will potentially be an NBA player.
I agree that a timeout should have been used, but isn't the rule that a coach cannot call a timeout anymore? Doesn't it need to be a player?
Umm the 20 pt lead we had begs to differ. Who gives a f*** if they came back. We stopped playing once they showed signs of a comeback and we thought we could just run out the clock with 10 minutes to go.
That doesn't make Iowa State a better team and again I don't give a f*** if you or any ISU fans disagree with that. That means we stopped playing.
If Kentucky builds a 20 pt lead against Northwestern and then stops playing and Northwestern comes back to win does that mean Northwestern is the better team?

Correct, the Fran apologists will scream heresy, but MG is a backup PG on a very good team, he's not a starter. He doesn't have the handles, quickness, or FT shooting you want at the end of games when teams turn up the defensive pressure. He's a good player but Iowa won't be an upper tier B1G team with him at PG. Put Ulis on this team and Iowa has a chance to win the B1G.
Gesell wants the ball to close a game, but he has zero track record. It's always a turnover, or a brick or getting his shot swatted, or putting up shot that misses rim and is shot clock violation.
This is just another sucky loss. You knew they would blow it in 2nd half.
This excuse is getting old. Isn't having a veteran team also beneficial to calling set plays?

This is it. Also, Uth makes the last shot and the whole narrative is different. Court storm was for coming back after down 20 against a very good team. Good luck the rest of the way.
I'm sorry Chewey, but after watching Iowa, for 5 years under Fran, routinely crap the bed at the end of games, Fran deserves the criticism. Hell just this year MG threw the ball off backside of the damn backboard!
