*****Iowa (W) vs Maryland Game Thread*****

Really, the only thing from this game that was alarming was that Maryland does not have a good center but they still managed to hold Czinano to 4 points. Stark contrast to Iowa's earlier home game vs Maryland in which Czinano scored 28 points. We'll see how she does against Indiana's Holmes at home.
You’ve really got to wonder what Bluder tries to do KNOWING that Holmes will be all over her.

Really? First team AA every year, possibly NPOTY, has a rough game, and we get "F'ng Clark. Take this a little to seriously do you? Ever had a bad day at the office? Its that kind of crap that makes the board toxic. Literally no one is spared even if they play 90% of their games at an AA level. F'ng Garza, F'ng Keegan I guess as well right?
I said that after Clark took a shot from damn near mid-court, flopped in an attempt to get the foul called, then literally laid on her back until the Maryland player pretty much dribbled right past her for an easy lay-up at the other end.

It looked absolutely ridiculous.

Pointing this out doesn’t mean I don’t know she’s a tremendous women’s ball player and AA - But - she’s not above criticism, especially considering her constant complaining and waving of arms in disgust after every call that doesn’t go her way.

Read Ross’s recap. Iowa shot poorly in the second quarter and the game got out of hand. Guess what? Maryland shot poorly at Iowa and the Hawks won that game handily. That’s why it comes down to good defense so many, many times. Deny passing lanes and cover the shooter. Simple, but hard. It can cover for poor shooting nights.

Agreed, she’s too slow on close outs and a liability on defense.
I would like to see #44 more. First defensive possession she gets a block.
I’m looking forward to her and that freshmen from Oregon in the post next year.
That Oregon girl is a 2024.

This is the type of game that can easily happen when a team relies too much on one or two players. Especially when the rest of the team is not very athletic.
With Czinano shut down and Clark pretty much double teamed the Hawks needed others to make shots...and they didn't. LOTS of open 3's missed. You probably can't get away with that at home v. a top team and you certainly can't do it and win on the road.

Flush it and move on. But the Hawks could really use another slick scorer to give them another top option when a team commits AND has the horses to pull it off, to playing great defense on the top 2 scorers.

Clark's 'animation' has significantly dropped since her infamous 'damn it" technical foul. Props to her and the staff for cleaning that up.

Last night showed she's still learning. There was another play she was trying to fight through a screen, flopped and laid there while the Maryland player hit a 3. Jensen was really chewing her ass yelling "get up" and pointing "up" w/ her hands. I've seen and heard her do that in previous games. Surprisingly though as Bluder walked by she gave Jan the "settle down" hands to get her off Caitlins back. Clark laying on her back w/ arms out questioning the officials has been reduced as the season has progressed, but it was back last night. I'm sure the result of a frustrating night for all involved.......

When teams are doubling Czinano and not letting us get her the ball like we've seen recently, how come we dont put another big in the game with Czinano like Stuelke or Ogrady? I notice we hardly ever have 2 bigs on the floor at the same time and im curious why? Someone with more basketball IQ than i may have an answer.

Two reasons. One, it would make it easier to double Czinano. When we play a four out offense it's usually hard to double the post because then the shooter in the opposite corner is wide open. If you add a second post, that post's defender is much closer to Czinano and it's easier to double.

Our problem last night (and going forward) is that Maryland left the opposite corner/wing shooters open to double Czinano and that opposite wing/corner shooter just didn't make enough shots to make them pay.

Having a second post could work if that player could hit an elbow or short corner jumper, but Stuelke doesn't shoot well, Warnock wasn't hitting them last night, and I don't think we have another big that shoots them well enough.

Two, Maryland had a relatively small five-out lineup. If we had say Czinano and O'Grady on the floor together, we'd have two 5s trying to guard the perimeter and I don't think that would go well. If we went zone instead, one of the 5s would have to guard the corner and that would be a major weak spot.

Frese is the one big coach i have a true dislike towards. She gets players in the portal because her recruits figure out she is as selfish as a coach can get. I doubt she cares hardly at all about her players orher than what they can do for her. Nobody try and change my mind about her because it's already made up completely. I'll take the word of multiple former players about what kind of person she is over anything someone has to say in her defense. Go Hawkeyes! This one means even more to me than a regular game.

But honestly the number of real “powerhouses” is decreasing every year. There used to be 8-10. Now there are 3 at most. Baylor is a shell of what it used to be. ND as well. Louisville is lost. MD and Ohio State are now typical teams. Rutgers is long gone. So is TN. Oregon was a blip, along with Oregon State. I could go on, but there’s rly so much parity…

It also seems like UConn might be the next school to join this club. And I’d rather play Stanford tbh (depends on Fudd). The only TITAN in the field is SC. A post season path comes down to toughness and matchups IMO.
I dont want to play a healthy UConn. They continue to get elite recruits. They will be back.

Probably why I normally don't read the threads during games. Play goes bad, and everyone reacts in the moment. The complaining thing just seems to be part of the culture of todays player. You see it constantly in a lot of games especially the guys. Clark is a basketball junkie, and thrives in that culture....

I think we can beat them this year since we played them pretty well early in the year. I don't think anyone will bring down south Carolina.
