*****New Hampshire vs Iowa Game Thread*****

Yep. He's 9th on the team in 3 point percentage, and shoot's double of the next guy. With that many attempts you can occasionally hit a big one. But you can also shoot your team out of a game. He's done both. Coach should take away his green light, unless he can get above 36 percent, otherwise he's just gonna keep jacking them up.
It's weird for one guy to take so many bad shots on a team where everyone else moves the ball and takes pretty much nothing but good shots all game.

I've actually thought his shot selection was better this season, despite worse results. In past years, he was good for two "WTF was he thinking??" jacks per game from like 35 feet. I think that arm injury was really messing with him earlier in the season - he was missing a lot of wide open looks in the Washington State and Utah State games, especially Utah State. You could say that in that case he shouldn't have been out there and that's a fair point but I didn't have as much of a problem with his shot selection as I thought I would (I read the box score for those games before I actually watched them). He's been rounding into form lately, though. I think he often rushes some of his shots unnecessarily which hurts his shooting percentage as well.

I'm happy with the offensive improvements I've been seeing in Dembele the last few games. He made a jump hook with his right hand against Utah and he hit one with his left hand tonight. If he can have a jump hook over either shoulder, that would be really nice, as I much prefer it to that fade away jumper that he normally takes instead of a lefty hook. He made that fade away jumper tonight as well. He's at 44% from three point range on the season and is doing a good job on the offensive glass. Hopefully, the improvements continue. He's going to see a lot of minutes as the back-up center and if we could use him at PF, alongside Freeman, that would really help the cause defensively.

Yeah, there hasn't been many of the super long shots but more rushed off-balanced shots than ever and a ton of drifting horizontally while shooting.

It's like he's trying to take the type of shots that some of the better shooters in the NBA can pull off but his percentage on those shots where he's not squared up has to be terrible.

It's not a benefit to the team to take these low percentage shots especially on a team that otherwise scores so easily.

This team is going to have to be Uber efficient offensively to make up for lack in other areas and they really don't need and can't afford the hero stuff.

Yep. Not sure why he or his coaches think his off-balance shots drifting horizontally are a good option. He makes a few of those WOW shots almost every game, but he misses a lot more than he makes. I believe Iowa would be better if Payton were a close third scoring option behind Freeman and Dix, who will shoot a much higher percent. I still want Payton taking shots, but spot up 3s with his feet set should be what Iowa is looking for. He also drives effectively against some defenders.

Maybe they're spending too much time around Jess Settles.

We won?..........We didn't lose?

I thought we were supposed to keep getting kicked while we're down after the bowl loss.

I'm shocked.

I think this Iowa team would go undefeated and win the National Title if they could play 350th ranked teams all the time. Since they didn't really play anybody, the topics have drifted beyond the New Hampshire game.

Most of the bitching on this board is either Fans that think there are things that could be improved if Fran actually wanted to do something different than what he has done for past 28 years, or fans bitching about fans bitching about Fran. Payton poor shot selection is subject of the day, and no Fran won't change a thing, but you never know...Payton might get hot or he might keep shooting low 30's from 3 to finish season.

I truthfully haven't watched much of the men this year. There's just nothing about this team that compels me to make sure I don't miss the game, or at least go back and watch highlights. I've probably watched more combined minutes of the women and their rebuild this year, than the men.

NH had 2 guys with 6 rebounds and 1 guy with 12. Payton lead us with 6. That is going to kill us in the BIG. We missed Owen and he would have gotten his share but we don't box out worth a damn including Owen.

Exactly. It isn't so much that he isn't open or is way out of range. It's that he doesn't get squared up, even though he has time/space, which makes the shot far more difficult than it would be otherwise.

I agree, but its never going to happen....

Owen wouldn't have made much of a difference rebound-wise. He is not a great rebounder.

I did a deep dive on the rebounding problems which will soon be an article. I rewatched the ISU game and quantified how frequently we managed to successfully box out all of the players they sent to the glass (usually 2 players) - we only managed to box them both out on 22% of ISU's misses. The two biggest failure modes were (1) plays where Freeman went to help and we didn't get their center boxed out as a result and (2) plays where we boxed out the center but didn't box out the second guy crashing in from the wing. Those two failure modes, collectively, account for slightly over half of the box-out fails. In my opinion, neither of these box out fails are due to Freeman who I think is working his tail off in there - rather, the guards need to do a better job of cracking down and getting their bodies into peoples' legs. Also, Freeman actually collects rebounds (both offensive and defensive) at an above average rate relative to all other high-major players who are his height 6'10. A few of the guards, though, are below where they should be in rebounding based on their height.

Still concerned about the spotty free throw shooting. Can't shoot around 50% - 60% and expect to win in the B1G, unless you're going to count on making a turnaround 26' at the buzzer on a regular basis.
How can young men play basketball 10 hours a day and never learn to shoot free throws? Four star and five star. Change the rules so we can a have designated free throw shooter from the band
