*****North Dakota vs Iowa Game Thread*****

OK, so the Olaseni/Freeman comment struck me, so I looked back - Olaseni was our best defensive rebounder by far in the Fran era. That's a good compliment, and knowing Jess, was something likely fed to him by the staff.

Freeman could be really special.

Still don’t understand Brauns leaving a solid program like Belmont where he was a starter to come here and never play. Makes absolutely zero sense.
Fran must have sold him a bill of goods, and maybe was covering his bets on Freeman being ready right away. As it is, the big O may just play starters minutes.....

He might be one of the few who is OK as long as he gets a scholarship and likes being a student at Iowa. Maybe he'll be the proverbial late bloomer who figures it out in his last year of eligibility. Currently, he is less a factor than Josh O and that is a low bar.
Cmon. We've played ONE game, and he's less of a factor then Josh? Thats a pretty damn low bar. Maybe we play into the B1G before we write the kid off. Word was he was in street cloths during the game, so maybe he's dinged or something.

Payton, Krikke, and Patrick should never be on the floor together. Frankly two of those guys probably shouldn’t be playing together.
Yeah, that trio are decent to good players individually but they aren't good together.

Not sure Perkins is better than Dix either, especially the forcing tons of off balance mid range shots version of Perkins.

That's a starting lineup made for protecting feelings not winning games.

My biggest thing is I would prefer that one of Freeman or Dembele be on the court at all times for rebounding and rim protection.

I'm pretty excited about Freeman and Dembele btw.

They could be Frans version of Earl and Street. Not that they are exactly similar players but similar level of impact in the future.

They can both do everything you want from a big, defend, rebound, run the floor, finish at the rim, back to the basket, pick and roll, shoot 3s, what's not to like?

Yeah I’d put Freeman and Dembele at the 5 and Krikke and Patrick at the 4.

We’ve played one game and he’s hurt, saying he’s less of a factor than Josh is misleading and speculative. Maybe give him a chance to produce? In any event, he’s from Iowa City and living the dream playing for the Hawks, I respect that.

Not sure how much more ceiling Saucey has. Definitely love his toughness and moxie, but just is never going to be a shooter. He certainly has a role but I am excited for guys like Pryce and Dix.
A guy like Freeman, with his athletic ability, should concentrate on being a defensive stud. For once, it would be nice if opposing team guards were not able to get into the paint so easily.

This is a very very very small sample size obviously, but through 2 days in college basketball, EvanMiya (analytics site) has Iowa's starting 5 as the most efficient offensive lineup in the country and it's not even particularly close. And yes, his rating system adjusts based off the quality of opponent, so it's taking into account that they played North Dakota.
It even indicates that this lineup was a better defensive lineup than the Dix + Freshmen lineup. Both were slightly above average, which would be a huge step up from last year if that holds.

Frankly I think it's a bit premature. But that lineup averaged 1.64 point per possession last night which is ELITE. For reference, Garza's last year when Iowa was 3rd in the country on offensive efficiency was hovering in the 1.16 ppp range for the year and on good nights the good nights they were peaking around 1.5 ppp. So I'm going to struggle to hear any argument that these guys shouldn't be playing together when they are scoring at that high of a rate and the numbers don't even indicate that they are bad defensively at this time. Maybe that will change in the future, but right now that's the best lineup.

But that lineup is just plain too slow. It may look good vs these low level teams. But come BIG season or vs ISU/Creighton etc. They’ll have to hit nearly 40 from 3 and/or not turn the ball over to have a chance.

And if that's true, the numbers will reflect that once those games come. That's kind of my point--right now that lineup is offensively the #1 lineup in the country. Again, that's adjusting for the opponent too. I'm a data-driven guy and right now the numbers do not back your argument at all because it shows that this unit was the better defensive unit last night too.

This is good information and you are correct that the sample size is too small for conclusions at this point. In past seasons, I would watch the games with an excel spreadsheet and track how all of the different lineups performed on offense and defense - basically curate this information manually. It's a major time commitment and perhaps it's time for me to give it up in favor of an evanmiya membership. I thought the second stringers looked a lot better defensively against Quincy than they did against North Dakota. Neither Dembele nor Freeman blocked a shot against UND and we only had two blocked shots as a team. That's probably my biggest criticism with our performance last night. I think Dembele/Freeman have a higher defensive upside than our starting front court players but they aren't quite there yet, which is natural given their youth and inexperience.

This was specifically in reference to Mulvey, which I bolded in my response. He's not from IC nor new to the program that I'm aware of.
I've got nothing to say one way or another about Brauns.

This team just may have enough 3 point shooters to not go through those droughts from 3 we have had in the past. The freshmen,(I know 2 games against not much competition), look pretty skilled for freshman. I saw more than a few defensive mistakes watching the highlights but considering past freshman I’m very impressed. Looking forward to the game at Creighton, not expecting a win there but should be a really good atmosphere for a learning experience . Kalkbrenner is likely to have his way against us so really need to shoot well from 3 that game. I think it’s going to be a fun season but next year could be really good.

I think we'll have some growing pains this season, but I feel like the freshman have a ton of potential and am hoping Pmacs new doo and tattoos come with a little attitude to bang in the paint.

The starters do one thing really well so far draw fouls.

It's actually been pretty ugly offense imo, lots of one on one forcing shots by everyone. Its paid off because they're drawing fouls and Payton is a great shooter so his forced shots are a good thing usually.

The defensive up side is night and day different but the freshman bigs, at least last night, fouled a lot. They'll figure that out after about half a season and then it won't even be close.

The starters front court is going to have a big problem rebounding against real teams.

It struck me last night how much further along in their skillsets Freeman and Dembele are than freshman big men used to be. You look at guys like Earl and Street and both were pretty raw as freshmen. Hell, Earl looked pretty damn raw as a redshirt freshman.

In the past, unless a kid was a McDonald’s All-American type, all you’d expect from most freshman bigs was a few awkward minutes in garbage time. Now you have Dembele out there nailing 3’s and Freeman executing posts moves like a 5th year senior.

We finally have at least one athlete ready to play as a freshman. I feel like we always look so young and underdeveloped compared to other teams

I’m working on my Christian Lattner recall. May have to sleep on it.

Agree, that's a big part of why I'm excited.

Even Garza was kind of clumsy his first two years.

These two look athletic, coordinated and agile. I get the same feeling watching them as I did Keegan as a early freshman that there's way more talent here than the rankings would indicate.
