*****Southern U. vs Iowa Game Thread*****

Fran is what he is. There are a few guys on this squad that are solid players but it’s the same old blind spots (lack of defense!) that had me looking at a lot of empty seats at CHA. My kingdom for a true power forward who can D-up and rebound.

no handles? dude wtf are you looking at?
They are not d1 pg level handles. His movements/dribbles are slower and higher. Nowhere near as tight as they need to be if you are guarded by the opposing pg.
many mistake a 2guard for a pg because they don’t have the best on ball defender playing them. Dix is an 2 that needs a real pg to take the pressure and find him shots. Dix has a good pull up game but it’s generally off a couple dribbles.

Congratulations Pryce!!

Freeman’s mentality towards defense is music to my ears, can the rest of the team take defense as seriously as Owen? Or is it all about trying to outscore the opponent?

Hate to break it to ya, Fran, but the defense has needed to be hella better ever since you started here about a decade & a half ago.

But other than, you're quite right.
I think it was Fran’s second year where there was a noticeable string of games where they played pretty damn good defense. But then they gave up like 120 points at Oregon in the NIT

Congratulations Pryce!!

Freeman is good defender vs most teams. At 6'10, he might have a problem vs some 7ft'es out there. He also tends to have foul trouble which limits is avaialbilty. I guess Dimbele can back him up, but Dimbeley struggles on understanding how to defend.

The problem as usual is the best offensive lineup struggles on defense and securing the defensive rebound to get the stop. The best offense has Payton, Pryce, and Dix in it and those 3 are not elite athletes. Payton is good rebounder, but worst of the 3 on defense. None of those guys is great dribble drive/handles, but Dix is most capable of getting a shot on his own and he's good defender, but he rebounds so-so.. Fran has a good team, but as usual, weak on defense/ rebounding/athletically challenged which makesit hard to contend with really good team. NCAA tourney is full of really good teams.

Looks like maybe 11-9 type B1G conference team, which would get Iowa into NCAA tourney and win a game, and then go home. Not bad, just not as exciting as 1980 and 1987....its been a long dry spell of NCAA tourney success and Iowa's NIL payroll is not high enough to make a deep run.

No it’s not ideal but sometimes you have to when you are forced baseline.
so don't get forced to the baseline. A good pg knows this. And it's not just when he drives baseline. He'll jump in the air to pass over someone at midcourt. Not ideal.

Someone mentioned earlier he was injured in the offseason & he's put on weight. He seems slower & looks to have less lift off the floor. Hopefully he works it out. Need an all out effort to improve team defense.

I agree with above. Freeman, Payton & Ladji each had 8 rebounds. Seems like a decent stat. But team gave up 10 offensive boards to Iowa's 5 offensive boards. Need to reverse this trend.

The entire defense looks bad. They constantly lose players inside. They can't stop the dribble drive. It's not just the lack of athleticism which is obvious at times. They also look really poorly coached on that end. In short, it's another year of Iowa basketball.

I will say that Pryce Sandfort looks like a stronger better version of Payton right now. Guy was on fire tonight.
There was talk out of high school that he'd be a better version of Payton, which would be great. Still without better consistent guard play on both ends its another Fran type team.......

you see it in every game, he is not unique. At elite levels, things are done a little differently than hs.
A good college pg is playing a good defender.

So you're claiming Iowa guards are elite? lol. And this was against SOUTHERN! Not exactly UCONN now is it?

Or am I reading this wrong? "things are done a little differently than hs" Meaning BH could get away with driving baseline & jumping to pass in HS, but not in college? Is this what you mean... hmmmm I think not... But do tell..

no, d1 college players are elite by comparison to hs.
defenses either force players baseline or middle. Every college game you watch you will see someone drive baseline, jump ob to pass the ball. It's not new. Some drive one direction, jump, and pass back to where they came from because they have good court vision and know where there players are.
YES there are times when leaving your feet to pass is ok. IT IS A SOLID COACHING POINT IN HS. NOT ALL COACHING POINTS IN HS CARRY OVER TO COLLEGE.
Your contention is that you should never jump to pass the ball? Good luck with that. Maybe you should only use your butt to block out too.

Yup. I do think that Thelwell and Dix S/B the starting guards just based on what I saw last night. I didn't watch the previous games so not sure if they would provide the same opinion.

you really don't know what you're talking about or you had a sh!tty HS coach.

Would you tell a player not to pass while they are running? WTF is the difference.
Do you struggle with english? yes it's a valid coaching point in hs, it's not a concern in college. If you have to worry about turnovers because they jumped to do it, you aren't playing anyways.

The more you talk, the more you prove you know nothing. A wise man once said "it is better to be silent and thought of as a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt", Comprende that?

Disagree. Iowa 14-16 place in Big. Will not be surprised to see South Dakota beat them

I just watched the replay and we are not bad. Owen coming into the season severely out of shape is concerning though.

Owen's response to a question was a lot better than his defense has been. Dembele seems to be the whipping boy, but he isn't the only one who is supposed to be guarding the basket.

Agreed, it's a team effort.... or lack thereof.
