OT- HS Boys State Finals wrapped up

North Linn does not poach kids, and no, I am not a North Linn fan. Coach Hilmer and his staff, along with the community, have done and tremendous job of building the program from the youth level on up. Their kids work extremely hard in the weight room and in other sports. They may get an occasional open enrollment student, but the vast majority of their athletes are from there.
Hey...hey....hey.............hey....................look here...................

Other programs have figured out what it takes to no longer be a successful program across all sports.

They can figure it out too.

Don't know much about some of those schools. Assumption does well, but I don't think they're on the evil empire level like Dowling or Valley, are they? First title in 24 years?

Western Christian doesn’t poach kids either. Once you know what Church the family worships at you can be pretty certain where they will attend grade school and high school.

Assumption starts for juniors and one sophomore. They will be ranked number one next year starting there season. Not sure about their sophomore squad and freshman but If they pick up another kid or two, they’ll be bad ass. Very talented group.
They lost 8 or 9 games in the regular season and finished 4 in the Mac at 4a . They drop down to 3a for state. Very talented but really should play 4 a.

Then make them.......
Waukee was forced to split?

That is news to me, but I’ll assume you know more than me.

I’m in Ankeny, and they definitely were not “forced” to split when they went to two schools. There were some salty people here when the decision was made. Of course, it was for the better.

Valley made the decision to not split 20ish years ago. Unlike Ankeny, Waukee, etc., they’re not going to get any bigger.

Also, both Ankeny schools, like Valley have 10-12 high schools.

They get the best players in Davenport , all top level talent but drop down to 3 a during state. Look at their lineup, it’s loaded .. They could easily compete against the 4 a schools. It’s kind of like the transfer portal in college. Kids in the quad cities transfer from one school to the other. It’s the new norm in sports.

I agree kids transfer quite a bit for sports but why should they play up? Just trying to get some clarification on your reasoning. Is it because they get transfers? Because they are a parochial school? If their enrollment puts them in 3A why shouldn’t they play at that level come tournament time?

He’s suggesting they pull from a 4A sized population. I get it.

To your point, there is no reason they should do something that zero other parochial schools do. You play your enrollment, and take advantage of your advantages.

Thanks. I wasn’t sure if he was putting more emphasis on the fact they play a 4A schedule.
Either way there is no reason they should be forced to play up a class

Yeah.

Of course, I’m putting words in his mouth. Maybe that’s not what he meant, but it makes sense.

That is news to me, but I’ll assume you know more than me. (As one should, clearly.........)

I'm sorry. You're right. They had to choose between something that was necessary or unnecessary, and they chose to do something unnecessary. Thank you for clarifying that for me. :)

Valley made the decision to not split 20ish years ago. Unlike Ankeny, Waukee, etc., they’re not going to get any bigger. (Oh I just want them to split because it would hurt their athletics. ;))

Also, both Ankeny schools, like Valley have 10-12 high schools. (That seems excessive......................................)

Doesn’t the DSM metro dominate pretty much every sport at the 5A level now? What does eastern Iowa win? The west side of the state pretty much has nothing since the Harlan and St Albert dynasties simmered down.

8 of the last 11 2A BB champs were from NW Iowa. Treynor also won a title. So 9 of the last 11 titles to Western Iowa. Also 7 of the last 15 1A titles.

Central Lyon, West Lyon, OABCIG and Remsen St Marys have won a number of titles in the last 10 years in football.

Western Christian has won 19 state tiles in Volleyball as well as numerous runner-ups.

Big schools. Other than SC East there really isn’t another large school that is good at anything. Well Fort Dodge at wrestling, if there were no transfers to other big schools FD would probably have a number of state titles as Drake Ayala once proudly announced

Are you kidding? What’s the population of the quad cities vs pella? It’s simple math. Their beds have no iep and little to no FRL. Those are unquestionable advantages. It is really stupid to dispute.
Just admit it’s an unfair advantage and be done with it. Why do you think other states have multipliers. Which is 100% what Iowa should have.

The kids play together from 3rd/4th grade up in the youth programs...in nearly every sport.

Extremely tight knit school and many of their teams have freshmen contributing early.
They play in a really shitty conference so the younger kids get lots of playing time early in their careers. By the time the kids are juniors/seniors, they are experienced.
With that said...they would be middle of the pack in 2A and even lower in 3A.
Not the schools fault, they just capitalize on the situation.

I do agree the western part of the state is a basketball hotbed compared to the eastern half. How does the western 1/2 do in 3A?

ELC could have beat western to go to state.

North linn was better than lake mills and north union who beat ELC worse than WC. I know the transitive property isn’t an exact science but it gives a pretty good picture.

Heck the 3rd place team in the tic east lost to ELC in Ot to play western. Forest city was the third place team and lost to lake mills by 30-40 one game. Heck decorah lost to cascade a solid 2a school.

Yes I know can’t compare, I’m just saying north linn is not middle of the pack in 2a or 3A. They play a style most do not see.
On any given night north linn could beat any 2a or 3A team.

Not so sure middle of the pack in 2A is accurate. 1A and 2A talent wise is usually pretty close. North Linn and Marquette would have beaten most 2A schools this year.

Agree.

I was more referring to baseball. Most years they have one above average/elite pitcher and for the post season, the games are spaced to accommodate using your ace for nearly every playoff game.
My grandson's play them every year in baseball in the non conference and they are typically 50/50. And my grandson's team is a very average 2A.

Is the Des Moines metro 1/3 of the state’s population by now?

Kind of crazy to think that the state of Iowa has all flooded to that area.

Born in the metro during the 70’s & everytime I head back it’s insane how much the Dallas County part of the metro is exploding!

The rest of the state is the same as always.

The state of Iowa needs Des Moines to keep booming to keep us relevant on a national scale.

Have to admit, it’s grown up to be a great city that I tell anybody I meet from whatever part of the US to stop in DM if you’re going through Iowa.

Hard not to have a good time there for a weekend!

So you are saying that Assumption should move up a class based on a rule you think Iowa should have but doesn’t?

I think it’s a much more complex issue. Should we create a multiplier based on success? A reverse multiplier based on free and reduced?

Should any public school that gets an open enrollee have to count the beds number from the school he came from? How does open enrollment figure into the big picture?

Do you know how many schools would move up a class based on a multiplier? Do you know what schools would move down if there was a reduced multiplier?

Who would move down if a private school moved up?

How many states have multipliers? How many don’t? Does it actually work or do they same schools dominate the next class? What do you do with Dowling?

In your "move up" scenario, the smallest public school in that class drops down.

Yes. I know. It was more asking who that school might be.

So let’s say a really bad Storm Lake St Mary’s moved up and a really good 2A team moves down. How does that affect the 1A tournament?

It’s approaching 3/4 million.

The Iowa City area is growing fast too. Not that far from 200k.

Also, I want to debunk an Eastern Iowa myth that I hear often when in Iowa City. Central Iowa is not Cyclone country. Outside of Ames, Cyclone country doesn’t exist. Ankeny is 20 miles from Ames, and it’s probably 50/50. Tons of ISU grads, but most everyone else are Iowa fans.

CB St. Albert just announced they talked Nebraska hall of fame coach Tim Cannon out of retirement to coach the Boys program. Cannon took Millard North to back to back state Championships in Nebraska's largest class. He was a SA graduate. I would expect some of the better B-ball players in the CB area will end up at SA, since Cannon is considered 1 of the best Neb. high school Basketball coaches in recent history .

The idea that ISU fans/grads are trying to prop up the DSM metro area as Cyclone Country though is real........
