Penn St QB Beau Pribula has Committed to Missouri after Visiting IOWA Wed, Dec 18. Will Iowa add a 6th QB to the Roster?

What does the QB room look like at Indiana currently? Or UCF? I'm not sold on Indiana maintaining that craziness of bringing in 30 new portal guys every year, NOT sustainable..

PT can't be overstated here, PSU QB is not coming somewhere to sit on the bench, he could've done that and shared time next year at PSU. Sure NIL in play but PT may trump that and what promises at QB are made to him by each school.

My understanding is Indiana is pretty high on a guy from Cal. I think his name is Mendoza? I really think it's between us and Mizzou. The fact he didn't commit on his Mizzou visit was encouraging. But the fact he didn't commit on our visit was disappointing. But hey, he's going thru the process, so good on him.

Honestly, if we get Pribula, Brendan Sullivan could easily be gone as well (as others have noted.)

We could be looking at the possibility that the top three QBs on next year's depth chart are all guys not on the current roster. (Pribula, Brown, J. Sullivan).

Iowa has time; they have until Aug 1 to get to 105.

More difficult discussions with players are yet to come, unfortunately. :(

I think IU has a good shot of winning at Notre Dame. That will be a fun game for Beau to attend; but I hope that's not the deciding factor :(

Of course not. Unlike you, I know what a win looks like. Recruiting Caitlin Clark wasn't a win. The WIN was landing Caitlin Clark.

My point was that just getting someone on campus is not a HUGE win. It’s simply a necessary step in a process. Unless it results in an actual signing it has no positive impact on the team come next fall. The huge win in this case would be landing Pribula. Lester knows that as well as I do, but if it makes you feel better you should send him a note of congratulations today on getting him to show up at all. I'm sure he'll get a kick out of you.
So first you state we’re wasting our time recruiting 4 and 5 star recruits and then when we get one to commit that’s really great. You complain if we recruit high rated kids and they go elsewhere but then rave about how good it is? Nice

4 roster spots for the QB room is an interesting number.

I wish the beat reporters would ask what the "budget" is for each position group.

The road to the final 105 man roster will have a lot of twists and turns
For sure on your last point. I have tried to make the point in this thread that Lester brought in both Sullivan and Stratton as guys he could work with in his system. Now a young guy like Stratton who worked his tail off and made the most of the opportunity he had here with the injuries becomes yesterday's news with interest from QBs in the portal. I love the game and attended every one in my college years but this new more cutthroat aspect of it really leaves me cold.

You quoted something that had nothing to do with what you just said here. Try again.

You just got me thinking that this would be a good poll question. My money is on 4.
I bet it will be five? Four scholarship, and one walk-on.

The QB room is one thing they probably won’t have to worry about. Those generally seem to take care of themselves. They see the writing on the wall.

Maybe? I don't think 105 allows for 5. I think 4 will be the absolute limit. Maybe they keep someone capable of playing another position besides QB?

College football feels more and more like the NFL (final day cuts, etc).

The NFL has to get to 53; FBS schools have to get to 105.

I really think it's between us and Mizzou.

Mizzou coach Eli Drinkwitz on his quarterback room:

"If we need to add a quarterback, we will, and if we don't, we don't. I really feel confident that we have really good players in that locker room, and they all understand that if we feel like we can add a player to create competition to bring the best out of everybody in the brotherhood, we'll do that."

Not sure how to read that. Maybe they don’t wanna overpay for someone but if the right one wants to be there they will grab them. Or maybe he think Pribula isn’t a clear upgrade so he’s gonna have to fight it out if he comes… interesting

So are these guys actually performing on these visits as they would in a tryout so that prospective teams can get a better feel or are they just talking?

They aren't doing a physical workout. But they will meet directly with Lester and whiteboard some stuff so Lester can get a good feel for the QB's understanding of different things.

Drew Allar is PSU’s starter this Saturday vs SMU.

Ethan Grunkemeyer (who was 3rd string) has assumed Pribula’s former role as the Nittany Lions’ backup quarterback.

Former 4th stringer (and now 3rd-string, when healthy) Jaxon Smolik, who has been rehabbing from an offseason injury, has not been cleared medically to play against SMU.

With Pribula in the transfer portal and Smolik ruled inactive for Saturday, it’s unclear who exactly will be the emergency #3 quarterback behind Allar and Grunkemeyer.

“We don’t have a third option right now,” Franklin said.

Just read where Kirk reiterated that Iowa will use the portal to supplement the program not to build it 👍 Makes feel a little better about the Pribula situation even though I know Lester will follow the blueprint that Kirk and Tyler Barnes have laid out as far as roster management.

If we add another QB they clearly have a plan in place as to how they manage the numbers. It will surprise me to see another QB sign with no clear path to playing time but we should know something soon.

Hope we pulled out all the stops

This 16 minute podcast is from just a few hours ago.

As far as a fit for Iowa: Eliot thinks Pribula is a better version of Brendan Sullivan (athletic but with a better arm).

Eliot said based on the film he saw, Pribula can really sling it & put the ball in tight windows. Eliot said if Iowa does not land Pribula, they will go after someone else.

What Hank Brown cost and what Pribula will cost Eliot said he doesn't know.

Watch the discussion here:

43 second clip from yesterday's discussion:

I just can’t imagine him playing for Scott Frost. Would be a poor decision.
I could easily see this happening. Nice weather to play in. Frost is probably a pretty good salesman and he's a former QB. He conned Adrian Martinez into going to Nebbie over the likes of Bama and Georgia.

Nate was underappreciated during his playing days.

In 45 games at Iowa, he threw for 8,302 yds, 68 TDs and 23 INTs.

In his senior season (2019), he threw for 2,951 yds, 16 TDs and 7 INTs.
Nate lives up here in the Twin cities. He's married to the granddaughter of a guy I know. No pics of the gd. Nate retired from the NFL because of back issues.
