How things have changed. Mel Tucker gets a very lucky transfer in Ken Walker iirc and has a very good first season so MSU people throw buckets of money at Mel, an unproven P5 head coach.

I do not remember all the subtleties of Kirks first years at Iowa and please post here the facts but iirc Kirk coached at least a year without a signed contract. It was like he was coaching as a 1 year coach on a handshake. And the Iowa admin did not want to do a longterm contract with a long term assistant coach with zero P5 headcoaching experience.

And what is wrong with an initial 5 year contract for $25 million for unproven coaches with some type of automatic 1 year extension each year to help with recruits thinking this head coach will be there for at least their stay and the school

These 10 year contracts are nuts and universities do not do this with other people or entities.

Certainly do not disagree with the length of some of these contracts. The Presidents/Boards get into panic mode if they feel they have a winner and the agents representing the coaches bark about 1 year extensions....unfortunately there will always be schools that will offer the coach what he wants relative to length of contract.
