I see this type of derision for those that watch “sportsball” as well. Reminds me of that movie Finding Forrester. Sean Connery’s character Forrester is a famous reclusive author who is acting as mentor to a high school kid named Jamal. Jamal is looking at his huge library of all the old classics and then sees a stack of National Enquirers. He tells Forrester he should be reading the The New York Times. Forrester replies that the Times is for breakfast, the Enquirer is for desert.

Haven’t watched it since it was the WWF but understand that people need dessert in their lives.
Exactly, if I see fandom for sports teams in a Twitter profile for example I will probably think that person is an idiot.

So as a sports fan I look at certain sports fans as idiots. However people can like what they like and do their own thing, they don’t need my approval or permission.

Here’s the problem actual wrestling has to deal with. If you’re a casual fan tuning in on a Friday night, would you rather watch a PSU ankle ride or somebody getting piledrived and thrown out of the ring?

Roddy Piper is dead? Damn.

FIFY
Fake combat is still fake, no matter how skillful the choreography. That's the problem Pro wrestling has to deal with.

GS - "Hey Vince, Iowa is going to pay me $xxxx NIL to wrestle next year. Why should I stick with NXT?"

Vince M - "OK. Let's revisit your contract".
Meh… I REALLY doubt NXT is paying him more due to him expressing a desire to wrestle. It’s not like he’s a pro wrestling star with a lot of pull at this point. My guess is that Iowa isn’t able to pay him enough to justify a commute between IC for wrestling practice and Minneapolis for acting lessons.

Right? Would you rather watch a sporting event or a choreographed, play acted, non-event? How can the two even be compared? Lol
No one is saying it isn’t fake. But WWE has a much bigger fan base than real wrestling does. As a real wrestling fan, I think that’s an issue. Most people on here are more interested in making fun of WWE than recognizing that a lot of real wrestling matches have become pretty stale and boring. And 3 point takedowns aren’t going to fix most of its problems.

Professional wrestling is a bunch of foolishness…. if it has any appeal… it’s as comedy ……

fitting entertainment for today’s society

Ever see the movie “ Idiocracy”

I’ve known people who thought it was real. Seriously.

Aha!!! Someone finally pinpointed the problem.

It's all Carl's fault.

Casual fan? I’m not sure if I would be considered a casual fan because I don’t know what the hell a casual fan looks like. I do know that I am addicted to fishing.

Amateur wrestling, whether NCAA or freestyle (or especially Greco), are niche sports, and they all have their issues that prevent them from being mainstream sports.

But they are still sports, and they shouldn't be compared to staged entertainment events. Why not compare wrestling to porn, and say, well, porn is more popular and more entertaining? It's irrelevant. You're comparing two things that shouldn't be compared, because they have nothing to do with each other.

Thank you. But I’m not sure everyone here knows pro wrestling isn’t a sport. Lol

Given they I lost interest in professional wrasslin by the age of ten, I would watch a middle school match before a WWE. I’d watch middle school girl’s lacrosse before WWE.

Agreed. The comparison was mostly meant to be tongue in cheek.

Since we’re on the topic of pro wrestling and this is the cess pool; I will say, if any of you ever have a midget wrestling show come around your area I highly recommend going! My brother got me tickets as a joke last Christmas and I was dreading going; it turned into being a blast! Lol

I will agree with your opinion on midget wrestling. I was thoroughly entertained by a show in Norwalk, Iowa 15 years ago. I still smile about it from time to time.

My only gripe was one of the "midgets" was clearly just a Tom Cruise sized man. But he kept the show rolling tossing the others around. The storylines were great aswell. They all really got into character! Good times

Sunday nite's NXT Great American Bash didn't go too well for GS...fans were apparently screaming "You're not Angle" during his match against some guy and his career starting out kinda rough.

LOL...he'll wash out in the pro circuit is my guess.

Why? They just write the script.

Let's see, how many people go watch some Superhero movie or soem Disney film on a Friday night vs watching NCAA wrestling? I wonder how the ratings compare for WWE vs NCAA? So I googgled and this was one of the first hits:

Obviously, numbers greatly increased with the show back on FOX this week. Last night’s show averaged 2.166 million viewers in the overnight numbers. That’s higher than the final and preliminary audiences for last week’s FS1 broadcast. The final audience last week was 1.23 million viewers, while the preliminary audience was 1.182 million viewers.

In the P18-49 key ratings demo, SmackDown averaged a 0.54 rating. The final rating for last week’s FS1 broadcast was a 0.36. SmackDown led the night in key demo viewership. A rerun of Blue Bloods on CBS led the overall viewership for Friday primetime broadcast programming with 2.473 million viewers.
For further comparison, the last live edition of WWE SmackDown to air on FOX two weeks ago had an overnight audience of 2.158 million viewers and a final viewership of 2.309 million viewers. The final rating last week was 0.62.

From off the top of my head PSU vs Iowa had the biggest rating on the Big Ten Network for a wrestling match at a little under 400,000 people. So people watch the pro stuff, I don't and really struggle with my age when I realize I last watched it in 98 lol.
