*****UMBC vs Iowa Game Thread*****

Will actual attendance break 5k?

Announced attendance is the number of tickets distributed, including freebies.

Attendance for Michigan was 10,000.

So, of the 10,000 tickets distributed, it would be interesting to know how many tickets were scanned. 8,000? Was CHA half full? CHA seats 15,056.

I remember a reporter in the past (might have been Dochterman) doing a FOIA, where he got the attendance & scanned ticket info for games. The difference for some games was large.

Are they Labrador or Golden retrievers?

Inquiring minds….

The UMBC Retrievers were the first 16 seed to knock off a 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Virginia had just 27 points with 15 minutes left in the game and just 44 points with 3:41 to go. UMBC would go on to win 74-54.

Where did you get the info that announced attendance isn't tickets scanned? I was at the UM game and I would have guessed it was 2/3 full just by eyeballing it--the most empty section was the student section funnily enough.
I also looked online at the ticket office about an hour before tip just to see how many tickets were still available to purchase and it didn't look like there was 5K listed. Mostly singles available on the sides and the top 2 rows in the corners.

I thought it was Dochterman who did the story on attendance vs actual tickets scanned; I can't find that info at the moment.

In the meantime, here's a story from Jan, 2010, the final months of the Lick era.

Why don't people attend games at Carver-Hawkeye Arena?

Jan. 13, 2010 2:00 pm

Lots of empty seats can be seen just after Iowa tipoff against Tennessee State Tueday, Jan 12, 2010 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City (Brian Ray/Gazette).

There were echoes at Carver-Hawkeye Arena and not the good kind.

Early in Iowa's basketball game against Tennessee State on Tuesday, one could hear the ball bounce on the court and then hear it again about a second later. A few fans yelled at the officials and individually they were heard loud and clear.

Officially Iowa listed the attendance at 8,021. If you were playing guess the actual attendance, it might include those four numbers but it would have looked like ... 2,810.

"I thought we might have been on the road," Iowa Coach Todd Lickliter said. "No, you can't put that in there ... you'll get me in trouble."

Iowa lists its average attendance at 9,124 through 12 home dates. The attendance includes all tickets sold, although plenty of customers don't make it to the games. My guess is about two-thirds of that number is correct.

Iowa's attendance has dwindled since averaging a sellout in 2001. Iowa's has averaged less than 11,000 tickets sold in each of the last two seasons.

Interesting, I've been to a lot of games this year and have felt that the official boxscore attendance feels pretty accurate. Usually about 50% full for the buy games and then 75% full for the UM game which is what Iowa is reporting.

Please count how many seats you see occupied during the game and report back. Thanks ;)

I'm taking the fam (no pics) tonight. Anyone know where to score good seats as I'm assuming there should be some available? The University site as well as StubHub and SeatGeek have a ton of tickets available but only in the high rows. Thanks. Go Hawks!

That's a lot of points. But it looks like they like to run with little defense too. Took the first half -15 and over 85.
Gave the points Saturday too after some consternation. I was surprised it was that easy on an unfamiliar floor. Hopefully it's just as easy tonight.

I have 2 seats mid court piggy back seats NN row 6 and 7 plus a parking pass that will allow you to park in the lot by the Dan Gable statue. I will sell these for a $25 dollar donation to my HWC polar plunge. So all proceeds will go to the Hawkeye Wrestling Club

You won't have any trouble sitting beside each other if you don't like piggy back

Yeah, announced and reported "attendance" is not the same as scanned tickets at CHA. Maybe those 2 numbers were close because of the opponent and that the game was on a weekend.

That article from 2010 reminds us of how bad things were under Lick. Less than 3,000 people showing up for some games. Iowa stating its average attendance was 9,124, with the reporter stating that plenty of fans were not making it to the games (he thought that on average 2/3 of the 9,124 attendance number were actually showing up).

Every starter - and a couple off-the-bench guys - should have double digit points tonight or they can GTFO.

But would not be the least bit surprised by a 1-27 performance from deep and a very lackluster 72-65 type of victory.

Chesapeake Bay retrievers I would guess -

yep.

It could easily be under 5k tonight.

I was at the E. Illinois game last year. Part of the reason was the place was empty.

Dude! That's a great offer. Sadly I'm just seeing it and already got tickets online. Very much appreciated. Merry Christmas.
