*****UMBC vs Iowa Game Thread*****

And 1 offensive rebound FOR THE SEASON. Both are stats I read in game threads that seemed impossible so I had to fact check. They're both real.
Yep! I must say that I didn't believe you but I just checked on ESPN and those stats are correct. 1 offensive rebound and 3 fouls on the season. Crazy.

He's a terrible defensive rebounder too. Defensive rebounds don't always tell the full story - you can box out your man to enable one of your teammates to get the rebound and still contribute to the overall defensive rebounding cause but Pat doesn't box out either. Mostly just stands there watching or taking off early to try and grab a cheap transition dunk by cherry picking. The kind of crap you see in a pickup game but not on a D1 court.

Fran pissing and moaning about the defense lol fix it then
He should be able to, I mean he wrote a book on it. It's in the fiction section on Amazon ;)

holy hell it's worse than I thought. 3 fouls. hahahaha.

3 fouls ... and not one since 11-14 (at Creighton). He has played 9 games (233 minutes) without committing a foul.

He's lethargic & passive. People blame the meds, but I'm not sure. I don't think he loves the game as I just don't see the passion or the fight in him. Maybe a momma's boy? IDK.

And his foul against Creighton was intentional so he could escape defending in the post.

I said at the time I've never seen a player at 6'9 take an intentional foul in that situation where the offensive player has his back to the basket 3 feet away from the hoop.

Yeah it could be the meds. I've seen first hand that if a person's thyroid hormone levels are off kilter it has a major impact on their energy levels and mental clarity. But whatever it is, I'd rather not see it on the court. If Pat can't play hard on defense then he shouldn't be getting minutes. Simple as that.

PMAC is passionate on offense looking for his shot but he is scared of physical play. His Dad has enabled him to become an incomplete player. Dad is a nut case that things his two boys are stars/extensions of himself. Fran shouldn't be coming up with these non-sense lineups that feature 4 forwards and Perkins at the PG just to make sure his boy still starts and plays a ton.

All the current Hawkeye young men all seem to be high character, no disrepect to them as people, Being tall but lacking muscle along with soft and below the rim athletically with defense as after thought doesn't win games.

I do think Harding and Freeman have more mental toughness than the other Hawks. Harding looks really good vs 2nd level competition....big question is how does his game hold up vs much bigger/better athletes in B1G play.

Sandfort plays hard but for some reason, he has road yips and loses his 3pt shot outside of Carver. Dix, Dibelle are solid. Perkins is solid but I expected him to take the next step in his game and he hasn't. Krikke is another 1-dimensional player...has to defend better.

This. He is a poor team basketball player. You’d be hard pressed to find these stats from anyone in college basketball. Add the 3 total fouls and you have a player any college coach would bench.
You can actually tell what kind of player he is on the court from these stats.

Maybe he's trying to and that's why he pissed because the guys are not responding.
lol. Are you even remotely serious. If this were even remotely true you would see people pulled for lack of hustle, poor positioning, getting blown by, poor rotations, defensive rebounding, and helpside defense.
Never happens unless fran has a guy he would rather not play on offense.
Pay attention to who fran pulls when they make a mistake.

As I said in the game thread. He gets 2 minutes at a time. Make it easy fran 2on 2off.

Good post. I would quibble with pmacs offense as being passionate. He’d get offensive rebounds if this were close to true.
He is a lazy offensive player. He gets to wait for threes and has one go to dive. He will drive to 8 feet then jump, either making an ill advised last second pass or off balance shot. It rarely goes well.
Where pmac excels: tip out/run out where he can get an uncontested dunk. He can make those well.

I'm hoping Harding, Freeman & Pr. Sandafort all hit the weights in the off season. They're going to get pushed around in B10.
I don’t think Fran pushes a weight training agenda very much
Our guys seldom seem to gain the same strength over their tenure as MSU and Purdue. Probably a few others as well but definitely impacts their ability to defend and rebound; not sure why Fran refuses to adjust 🤷🏻‍♂️

For PMAC it's lack of effort. For the other guys, they "try their darndest" but still stink on defense. Honestly, I am not sure which of these two possibilities is more painful to watch.
Defense is all about attitude; I have to assume other players see Patrick with ample playing time and zero D and feel “why should I”
Any coach with an IQ over 110 would see this unless he just doesn’t give a damn

yep, Bowen has been in Fran's doghouse for awhile

is there a strength & conditioning coach for b-ball?

It’s desire, but it’s also positioning, sitting down in a stance, closing out under control, etc……Iowa does none of that. I was dumbfounded how bad Iowa was defensively early under Fran, but I’m just so use to watching that trash on that end, its just typical for Iowa now.

Fran bitching last night about D. Whatever. It’s never been emphasized/taught the correct way under him and will be garbage again this year. Defense isn’t just something you turn on/off
