*****Virginia Tech vs Iowa Game Thread*****

Very good defensive effort for Iowa I thought. They block out well on the defensive end, and have a lot of tough minded, hustle players like Kylie, Affolter, Mallegni, Stremlow and others.

Having only scored 71 points we aren't going to be the best on that end, although i thought we moved well. Against a better team we'll see if we're able to get those easy post shots that O'Grady had. O'Grady can't score OVER people, it's mostly when they front her and she gets that lob that she scores. Better teams can play behind her and turn her into a passer - she has limited post moves if a similarly sized player plays behind her.

Also noted that Olsen REALLY wants to use her inside hand when driving the left side of the lane. I don't think she can use her left hand on the left hand side very well, which is why her shot chart is so right hand biased and why she shot like 35% on the left side lane last year. She shot at least 3 driving shots on the left side using her right inside hand. She did make at least one tough left handed shot. Worth watching, because better teams who scout us better will lock Olsen left and will NOT front O'Grady.

2-0! Keep on doing the damn thing! Lucy is a baller and think Stuelke is going to be our glue player this year. Nice passes inside too. She's growing each year. Addison as well was really good. Va Tech won't be a bad team this year. I think they'll be mid to lower mid ACC which is decent.

Olsen, Kylie, Affolter & Stremlow played very good on ball defense. Va Tech had a difficult time with any penetration & or kick out for a three.
Turnovers were high but to be expected this early in the season. Lots of offensive options on this team and with improved defense, they will give teams a game.

13 missed Iowa layups.

3 point shooting is a concern.

How Iowa got to 71 points:

4-18 (22%) from 3
25-45 (56%) from 2
......................................
29-63 (46%) Overall

9-14 (64%) FTs

71 is pretty dang good after scoring 8 in the 2nd

Quite honestly, without Caitlin, this team may be more interesting and harder to guard. Caitlin was the focus. Now, led by Lucy, you have 5 players on the floor who can score. If Addie can raise her game teams cannot focus on Hannah inside. More offensive options for Iowa. Should be a fun year. Not sure we are Final Four material but we will probably be better than the preseason pundits project.
