*****Virginia Tech vs Iowa Game Thread*****

We’re a way better defensive team. Clearly not as good on offense, of course, but that team tonight every girl played defense.
Was going to say the same thing. The girls were sliding their feet and in their grill for the most part. Blocked out well for rebounds.

Addie's foot work and positioning on the block is much better. She keeps that ball up and uses both hands well.

Fast breaks aren't as fast but still Hannah got a couple rim runners. Caitlin was so fast converting rebounds into fast break points.

We'll see how she handles the ISU girl, Crooks.
And a game like she had tonite can certainly be a confidence builder!
Absolutely. Still as one poster pointed out early on teams with better posts will play behind AOG and force her to show more skill in the post. I was happy to see her drop that 8ft jumper from the baseline. That would add to her game as well.

McCabe is just so small. I feel like if effort alone was the key to being a plus defender, she’d be in the mix. Not the way it works, though.

Yeah you have to be physical to defend well at this level. McCabe did get on the ground for a loose ball once and her foot movement seems like she could be ok, but then when you watch Stremlow jump over someone for a rebound and finish with a backwards reverse layup in traffic you kind of raise your bar a little. :)

Harder to guard is relevant though. We averaged about 93 points/gm last year 1st or 2nd in the nation again. This team will not be anything like that, (though I think we may be better defensively).

The team will score at a higher rate than you think. High 80s or even 90 points a game is not a stretch. Last year they scored 80 points against VA Tech. Two games later they scored 58 and lost to KS State. There are going to be lower scoring games. I see no reason they cannot score similar to last year.

Low to Mid 80's with better defense. We now have 2 Centers we can consistently rotate. Hannah is and always has been a 4. O'Grady had the one beautiful post move. O'grady's issues are still a lack of quickness and aggressiveness on the boards, but it was marginally better. She looked better conditioned, with a little more ball skill. What they have worked on is the lob pass and it worked very well. You won't be able to do that on taller players consistently. That is where having Heiden will be great for this team. With Quicker 5's you can switch to Heiden who has slightly better post moves and more quickness aggressiveness. What is impressive is you have a pretty solid team with 60% to 70% Affolter. There was not near the fall off many expected. This is likely a top 25 team with a potential at getting to the sweet 16.

I don't feel bad. Better players play, and thats how it should be. She'll have the chance to show her value if she can make three's and work hard on defense. Stremlow just seems to have that "dawg" in her that Syd has. Excited about that....
You all shouldn't write off Taylor McCabe so quickly....she will be a real contributor to this overall team effort...not taking anything away from Affolter or Stremlow or Feurbach, but none of them come close to her three point range and consistency....

She looks improved, and if we need offensive firepower has the potential to take over a game if we need it. She is more of a specialist, but we can actually use her more this year, with some very good defensive players to help cover for here deficiencies on defense. She is still primarily a spot up 3 shooter. If she can do the step back like Kylie did today she will become a much better offensive player. You have to be able to shoot with a hand in your face.

Will just agree to disagree. Putting aside CC22 ability to drop 30+ points EVERY game the gravity of the way she opened the middle if the floor AND spaced the floor for other shooters is something totally different. I also don't see Lucy averaging near Clarks almost 9 assists/gm. As we've already discussed at length, Lucy is an exceptional midrange player, but this clogs the lane allowing less room for the post players and drivers. WE'll have to be VERY sharp consistently from three to counteract that. I could see us averaging low 80's IF everything comes together but 10 points/gm statistically is a huge difference. I do think we'll be better on defense, so that will help. I'd be thrilled if they were closer to your projection truly, but I don't see it....

No ones, "writing her off" The poster asked "why she's not playing more". She has limitations.

They are two games into a season with six new players, veteran players with much more responsibility, a new head coach, and two new assistant coaches. They have won both games rather easily. Yesterday they played very well at times during the game. Over the next month they will get more comfortable playing together and continue to improve. I’m more bullish on this team than many posting here. I would be surprised if they are not hosting NCAA games in March and do not make it to the second weekend.

First opportunity to watch a game.
Struggled at first to the tempo of the game. Set plays and different people in positions I'm not used to.
Looks like more of a team concept with several good players all around. O Grady impressed me compared to last year.
I like the hustle of Stremlow, Affolter and Meligeni. Hanna is still Hanna but needs to work on her 3 shot.
Overall, I really like the play of this team. Defense and rebounding is much better in my opinion.
Go Hawks.

From the extremely limited time watching this team, I like what I see. They've been misjudged by the "experts", as if there is no life after Caitlin Clark (really, that's an impossible standard to meet, for any team). It is an NCAA tournament level team. They've got some gritty, motivated players on this team, that play well together.

My takes after attending Missouri Western look good. Feel free to call me out on anything now or later:
Left near the end of the third and just got home. Hannah looks even leaner and meaner. Olson is legit. Most improved in the offseason looked to be Feuerbach (looks like she put on a little muscle) and O’Grady, who had a sweet fall away buzzer beating put back off an Olson miss from three. Mallegni looks fearless, and like she’s got some grit and grace to her game. Heiden got stronger as the day went.

ISU fans probably think they'll run away with it against us. Honestly, that's going to be a good game and we can win it. People might think we're going to fade away because CC is gone but in reality, we've always been there and CC was just the next (gargantuan) step in that process.

We can beat them. They better get their lick in this year because it might be the last time they have a realistic shot against us.

I agree. They're a fringe top 25 team, at least to me. They still have some ballers on this team. Iowa is rebuilding a little bit but I firmly believe this is about as bad as Iowa will be for a long, long time and they're still a team capable of competing for a top 4-6 spot in the B1G. Think about that for a second.

I honestly don't think we're a team that will have "rebuilding" years after this year. That's impressive if this caliber of a team is considered a rebuilding year for a program in my opinion. That means you've arrived.

This program hasn’t had a true rebuilding year in the past 18 seasons. People act like a sweet sixteen bid would be due solely to the Clark Effect. But Iowa made the sweet sixteen three times in the seven years before CC set foot in Iowa City.

Very true. Iowa WBB has been good for 40 years. We took a program changing step getting Bluder. I was more just stating an optimistic approach that we're going to improve upon even those impressive results under her. People should be excited for what Jan is about to build. I'm thinking freaking Championships here. Not one, not two, not three...lol.

I absolutely believe under Jan that we're taking that next step.

That's what happens around here what with all of the so called experts chiming in. It usually comes back to bite them.

Amazing to think about. We graduated four starters last year (Clark, Martin, Marshall and Davis). And after this year we lose four again (Feuerbach, O’Grady, Affolter and Olson). Yet here we are. Optimism abounds.

I like to look at who gets the minutes. Today, 9 players played. I thought that Heiden would start by Wednesday against Toledo, but here’s the top 9 from tonight.
Olsen 39
Stuelke 39
Feuerbach 34
O’Grady 26
Affolter 24
McCabe 11
Stremlow 11
Mallegni 10
Heiden 4
No way Heiden stays at 4 mins per game.

Is Guyton definitely out for full year?
