*****Virginia Tech vs Iowa Game Thread*****

I like to look at who gets the minutes. Today, 9 players played. I thought that Heiden would start by Wednesday against Toledo, but here’s the top 9 from tonight.
Olsen 39
Stuelke 39
Feuerbach 34
O’Grady 26
Affolter 24
McCabe 11
Stremlow 11
Mallegni 10
Heiden 4

I love Lucy!

I was impressed that Stuelke and Feuerbach were able to avoid foul trouble so they could stay on the floor for that many minutes. As the bench gets more experience I think there's a few more minutes to be earned there but it makes sense to rely on the starters (+syd) for a game like this.

Quite honestly, without Caitlin, this team may be more interesting and harder to guard. Caitlin was the focus. Now, led by Lucy, you have 5 players on the floor who can score. If Addie can raise her game teams cannot focus on Hannah inside. More offensive options for Iowa. Should be a fun year. Not sure we are Final Four material but we will probably be better than the preseason pundits project.
Does anyone still think this isn't a tournament team barring alien abductions and injuries?

You know those types of "scrappy" players you hate when they are on other teams, but love them when they are on yours? I think Iowa has a few of those.

Affolter, Mallegni, Stremlow.... maybe Feuerbach
Great to see Addy playing so well, she looks more aggressive and is catching the ball better and putting it in the hoop !

I think we are a tournament team. The offense will continue to grow but the defense is much better than last year. Gabbie was great, but CC often had to take breaks, and it seems early on our overall team D is more connected.
We’re a way better defensive team. Clearly not as good on offense, of course, but that team tonight every girl played defense.

Mcabe is just in there to shoot 3 pointers with no defense and no passing abilty I like the freshman Strealine over her

Favorite play of the game was when Stremlow crashed in and ripped the offensive rebound out from the taller VTech player's hands, then, facing backward, smoothly converted the reverse layup put back.
She is a fighter she is better all around versus McCabe

Great game, overcoming an ice cold second quarter and never losing composure.

*If Iowa was hitting even a few 3s, which they very much can, they could have blown the game open.

* Lots of different players can get double digits. When Syd is fully back to her game that brings a lot of options.

*Stuelke with the handles down through the paint is a nice new development. She looks a lot more confident in that regard.

*The Stremlow sequence with the get-ahead assist, followed by the rebound putback was money.

*The post feed lob passes were so consistently good, you have to think they drill that pass like crazy. Made it easy for AOG to show off her experience.

* Lucy Olsen has a strange ability to stretch her stride going to the hoop. Gets a step through the ten foot line and somehow at the hoop with a layup. And by strange ability I mean awesome ability. I love that move. Olsen is a bucket.

*Way better getting after the ball snd rebounding in game two. Think they may have harped on that after the NI game film.

*I feel like they have lots of fouls to play with this year, meaning they are just deeper all around. This means they can afford to play aggressive on defense, and it will pay off.

*Kylie with the step back 3. More of that! Really surprising to have such a bad night shooting from 3, and still win by 19. I don't think that will be the normal shooting percentage.

* Just scratching the team's abilities. Feel like they will keep improving in every game, getting more figured out, and finding their spots. Pretty exciting!

You're pretty much spot on with all points listed.

I will go one step further with your point on blow the game wide open.

They also had 13 missed Iowa layups with those missed 3s.

who was that?
Kitley was VT's star center last year. You know when we played them, lolol. She's 6'5" I believe. She blew out her acl at the end of the year and was drafted by the Aces along with Martin. She sat this year, and should play come April..

Why does McCabe sit so much?
Is it her defense?
Honestly she still brings little other the three point shooting IF she's wide open. She can't create her shot. I think you're going to see Syd in that spot and Stremlow take a bunch of those bench minutes.

I feel like she'll play more when affolter plays more. Olsen and affolters passing will leave her wide open for 3s and she's a wonderful wide open shooter
I'll take that bet. When Syd starts are you going to bench McCabe or Kylie, who's a much more complete player on both ends of the floor right now. Stremlow will be in the mix for those back up 2/3 minutes as well......

Harder to guard is relevant though. We averaged about 93 points/gm last year 1st or 2nd in the nation again. This team will not be anything like that, (though I think we may be better defensively).
