Why would we do that? Burn a redshirt year on a backup? Makes no sense.
I don't care who steps up their game, just want someone viable and will root for whomever is there. However, Turk is in his fourth year. He has the game, we just don't see it much. Murin barely lost to him as a redshirt last year, beat Happel on Thursday and beat Turk on Friday. All of these guys know each other really well and Murin still won. I think Murin gets the spot...better in all positions and Turk has a tough time getting off from bottom. Unless Turk makes a huge leap by Midlands, I'm thinking Murin goes. Bigger upside and we have to have him as an AA contender next year.
Definitely a bad idea for a back up - but did he have a shot at 57? Does anyone know how he does against those guys? Just seems like it may get tight up top with incoming recruits so starting and reshirting later wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing if he was clearly the guy at 57

Turk is repeat and rinse. I didn’t see anything from yesterday match to suggest improvement from last year. If Murin can’t win the spot outright, Iowa won’t have much of chance to AA at 41
He needs the redshirt year. A little more strength & mat time and he'll be ready to go.
I know! He was exactly the same guy to start the year last year that he was at the end.
I'd like to see Murin win the job, and suspect we will, but this is the kind of thing I was talking about earlier in the thread.
I thought Turk improved by leaps and bounds last year. He still lets people get to his legs too easily, and I too hope Murin is an upgrade, but the Turk at nationals was much better by the end of the year, imho.
Boy, Brands wrestled tough. he couldn't get through Marinelli's defense but he made Alex work hard.
If he can make the weight, why shouldn’t he start this year if he is the best guy for the future? Iowa is built for a 2020 title. The experience this year would probably be more beneficial for next year than a redshirt would be, no?
It took a last second move to beat an unseeded guy at NCAAs? How many points at nationals did he earn? It gets tiresome reading he turned it on at nationals. 141 is a big hole until proven otherwise.
Turk scored 3.5 points at 141. Over the past 6 years we have scored a total of 13.5 points at 141. That's a major fail, and incremental improvement isn't the answer (I'd like to win another title before my grandchildren retire). Murin has shown the will to win, and he's a freshman, so my hope is on him because I've lost faith in the other two people we brought in as part of our shrewd trifecta recruiting strategy at 141.
Columbus had some good wrestlers; I recall D. Woods should have continued after high school.
I sat by Nelson's mom on Friday and she said his walking around weight is in the low 170's. She said his ideal wrestling weight would be 165, but could make 157.

He was in street clothes at Friday’s wrestle-offs when I saw him not sure if he practiced before or not.
He is 10 days old. I cant live vicariously through him like a Souci dad yet?!
Lol, I never lived vicariously through them, but when you have a natural destroying everyone and becoming a local celebrity phenom you hate to see that wasted. He did crack from the attention and making kids run off the mat crying to their coaches. Nobody would practice with him at frickin’ Denver on Sundays. That’s the big time night in this area. He’s been in therapy and has only been practicing and wrestling his three older brothers for a year and a half, but now that the Schwab boys have committed to wrestling, he’s all in again. That was his stipulation. BOD is back better than ever and it’s good for Iowa wrestling. You’ll see.
This post doesn’t help my cause, does it? Don’t care, I gotta freak of nature. Just ask and I’ll tell you all of his athletic accomplishments. Best athlete in Waterloo without question.

Brands should wrestle 57 at Midlands this year, and if he is the best guy start. That saves his redshirt for a later year, and he’ll likely have a year on the bench later behind Marinelli and he can redshirt then.
I’d like to see where he’s at with the guys at 157. If he can’t beat then then it’s a moot point. But if he’s the better guy than it makes more sense to save he redshirt.

He did BLOW UP for a moment when he got in to the locker room. I was sitting by the door entrance and it was loud in there. Kid looked to be bigger and stronger to me and could start for most colleges.
I've heard some interesting things regarding this happening during practices, at least one involving someone you'd not expect and it got really heated. Things happen in a D1 wrestling room but hopefully this doesn't get out of control. There are going to be some real coaching and teammate challenges with this wrestler.

Jokes aside, props on showing the restraint to not divulge that info. It’s gossip. Don’t get me wrong, I love the gossip, but it’s good to not engage in it.

He can't beat those guys when he's at 165 and they are at 157 so what would make you think he could after sucking down 8 lbs? He's redshirting.
All I said is that I’d like to see where he stacks up against those guys. His chances would undoubtedly be better there than against the Bull.
That's cool. I know many don't like him but I do. He's a fan of wrestling and gets excited about it, we need more Shane Sparks.
I agree it makes a lot of sense to cut a bunch of weight to be 3rd string behind Young and Glosser.
Did not realize that he was clearly behind Young and Glosser. Thought he might be competitive with those 2. If not, than I take it back. Let him sit 3 years behind Marinelli.
I hate the word “hole” at any time, but especially at a weight that earned R12 type points at nationals. 99% of us would brag that we wrestled college let alone were R12.
R12 is better than 99.9% of the posters on this board ever did, but at schools contending for NCAA titles, anything other than AA is a "hole" IMO. Everything is relative.

Get off your high horse. No one is knocking a guy for making R12. That's a great accomplishment individually depending on caliber of wrestler the guy was going into college.
If you're trying to win team titles, R12 isn't going to cut it. That's the only thing people mean by "hole". Hole = not scoring enough points at nationals to contribute to the team winning a national championship. Pick a more PC word than hole if it's triggering you or else head back to your safe space over at BWI.
Honest question-
Does is make you equally mad when someone refers to a pro athlete as terrible? A qb that threw 3 interceptions, a ballplayer with an error and 4 strikeouts etc? Almost everyone making those comments couldn't have sniffed the big leagues, but athletes in any sport are compared to other pro athletes, not average joes.
