Iowa State sweet 16 first year coach. Lol

We have Michigan, St Peters, Iowa State, UNC and Miami competing for a college basketball national championship right now.
The fvcking system is flawed. I like the underdog story, but come on.

Yes Fran does suck.
I would rather skip conference tournaments and make either the whole tourney double elimination or even if you wait until the round of 32 or 16 to go to double elimination. College baseball does it and college basketball could also.

It always cracks me up every time ISU does something good the number of clone fans that come on this site. Congrats on your win, congrats on making the sweet 16. I wish Iowa could make it there. Now please go back to your site.

Some things never change. Yet, they'll go right back to denying that they are obsessed with IOWA.

I apologize, you are 100% correct. You do need a new AD that should realize that you can't worry about the next Lickliter, you have to take risks. You can't look at it and think, we could end up worse. That sets you up for failure. You have to be willing to risk it and go long. And apparently your AD has some deep pocket friends whispering in his ear to keep Fran.

I am an old guy, I know you guys had Lute and Dr. Tom, You have the ability to be so much better. I just don't see that in Fran. Good luck to you.
Get lost. Nothing is more nonsensical than a Clown opining on Iowa athletics. Do you really think anyone is interested in your opinion of Lute and Dr. Tom? Lordie!

Iowa’s best shot SHOULD have been last year, with Luka, Keegan, and Joe as the core. If Fran had played Keegan more, Iowa would/should have been a tough out.

JBo and Connor at guard will not get you very far in the NCAAs. Perkins showed some spark toward the end of the year and in the Big 10 tournament, but still is not a consistent top level guard. So much runs through outstanding guard play and Fran’s specialty is lanky big men.

I would have loved having a wing like Keegan on the Cyclones team this year. We just didn’t have anyone who could score the ball as consistently as he can.

I hope Fran stays at Iowa forever.
Your last sentence cost you a like.

I haven’t been following them closely this year other than a few games. Based on this every player could come back if they decide to use their Covid year. Though they’d have 14 guys on scholarship then.

For any ISU fans, are the players all making it clear they’re coming back?
I don't think any have decided yet. I'm sure Brockington will test the NBA waters.

Conference tourneys need to go. They serve no purpose other than to let a team like Richmond in that finished 6th in their conference. These teams take the place of a more deserving team (P5 or their own conference champ) and play with nothing to lose. If you win the tourney you risk a key injury or wear out your legs. If you are a sure tourney team you probably don't have your heart in it.

100%, more non conference tournaments. Heck spread a week of mini tournaments in the middle of the season.

Miami - ISU is going to be another rock fight. Miami has won 2 games shooting 4-29 from 3 (1-14 and 3-15) while being outrebounded by 20 over the 2 games vs USC and Auburn. Miami is built on defense too.

And in the span of 12 months that coach turned around a program that had gone 2-22.

SMH
But, But, But....we got a Big 10 Weekend Exhibition Banner to raise.....don't worry about the tournament that 99.9% of the other people in the country care about....just worry about your own little shiny play pretty to stick in the trophy case next to the NIT Participation ribbons.

You're the 1st person who has said this lol. They have one of the better offensive teams in the nation.

Did you finally beat Iowa in a sport?!?!

I must’ve missed that. I thought Iowa had like 8 straight wins in b-ball & 43 straight wins in fball.

I could be wrong though. I don’t follow you guys.
Oh make no mistake about it, we blew you out this year. Tune in Friday and cheer us on for a spot in the Elite 8! Youll have nothing else to do?

Amazing how we don’t hear from Clone fans for months while their team is stinking up the Big 12…….but when they get a little taste of success, they come here in droves puffing their chests and strutting around.

So predictable and sad.

Unfortunately facts get in the way of your theory. Keegan averaged 24.5 minutes in the 2021 NCAA tournament (25 and 24). That was good for third most minutes behind Luke and Wieskamp. Also, 24 minutes in the Oregon game was the 3rd most minutes behind, you guessed it, Luka and Wieskamp.

I just looked up the starters in the Iowa State-Wisconsin game. Top three in minutes played were Kalscheur, Hunter, and Brockington, all in the 31-34 minutes range. If Keegan Murray is all that, and I think he is (even last year), then I would want him on the floor 30+ minutes, especially in a tight game.

But then Fran has to get Connor, JBo, and others their minutes, so your top squad is not on the floor. Tim Floyd and Larry Eustacy often only had 7, maybe 8 that saw the court and they got the job done.

Of course, there are teams that can trot out 8-9 4 and 5 star players but that’s not Iowa or Iowa State.

Tight game? Oregon vs Iowa was 56-46 at the half. Not exactly what I’d call tight. The score was 89-68 (-21) with 5:00 minutes left.

Keegan was -14 bpm in 1st half. He was (0-2) with 1 point in 11:16 1st half minutes. Keegan finished 2-9 (1-5 from 3) with 6 points in 23:40 minutes.

You think another 6-7 minutes there would make up the 15 point difference?

*I’m not trying to blame Keegan for the loss either. He had a poor game by Freshman Keegan standards, but so did many others including JBo, CJ, Connor. That is more likely the reason for the loss to Oregon. Three starters and your 6th man have uncharacteristic poor performances.

I completely disagree with you on this. Why? ISU is built on defense. It’s their thing and they’re great at it.
Agreed, Iowa State started out playing way better ball than we did. Had a dry spell and are obviously very dangerous right now.
Fran shit the bed as usual. Stupid rotations and no d killed us.
They beat two teams that are both way better than Richmond.
I don't get trying to demean what they have done in the tourney so far when we lost to freaking Richmond.
The coach has them ready to play. TJ is the real deal, young and hungry.
Maybe we need some young and hungry coaches?

I’m a Fran defender. I know that isn’t cool since he lost his last game, and clearly any coach who loses a game should be fired on the spot, but it is what it is. I’m coming up on 40 which means I was in school when Alford killed the program in the 2001-02 season (Started the year ranked top 10, Carver was sold out on a season ticket basis, by the time Iowa played Ohio State at home late in the season there were at most 2500 people at the game). Yes the dead cat bounced in the 2005-06 season, but it was dead nonetheless. And, I had season tickets to watch Lick misquote The Dark Knight and repeatedly and mercilessly rape the lifeless husk that was known as Iowa Basketball prior to his arrival on campus.

The trajectory of the program seems clear to me: Fran’s first four years there was two NITs and one NCAA play-in, next four there was two NCAAs and one NIT, last four would’ve all been NCAAs if not for 2020 being canceled. Do I wish for more success in the tourney? Sure, but the best way to have success in the tourney is to get there consistently and with decent seeding, and that’s happening so I believe Fran can deliver there too.

So, in light of the unprecedented lows preceding Fran’s tenure and the clear positive trajectory of the program, I’m curious to know who are the can’t miss hires out there that are certain to “take Iowa basketball to the next level”?

One will never know if the job isn't open and actively seeking candidates. Coaches jump ship all the time for better opportunities when schools recruit and seek them
TJ did in his first year after a 2-22 season what Fran has never accomplished in his life.
Wouldn't surprise me at this point if ISU made the final four.
Fran has sucked other than the Big Ten Tourney this year. I was thrilled the way we were playing the last 6 weeks.
Then the usual same Ole same Ole smacked me in the mouth.
Fran has had 13 years, he's not the answer.

What's your point in saying this? Trying to make yourself feel better?
The Importance of Truth. Truth matters, both to us as individuals and to society as a whole. As individuals, being truthful means that we can grow and mature, learning from our mistakes. For society, truthfulness makes social bonds, and lying and hypocrisy break them.

12 years, but I don’t know what the question is.

One thing I've learned over the years is to temper my expectations when it comes to my favorite sports teams. I've learned this the hard way (Hampton + UAB come to mind). This year's ISU team has FAR exceeded anyone's expectations. I go back a few months and "hoped" they could be around .500. I was prepared for them to be left out of the NCAAs, given their late slide. When they got in, I forced myself to simply "watch the game" and not get upset if they lost to LSU. Even against Wisky, I didn't expect them to win; I just watched and tried to enjoy the moment. As the stakes get higher, simply watching the game gets more difficult, but I find it more enjoyable and probably healthier. Friday will be a challenge because it appears like a winnable game vs. Miami, but I also recognize that the ISU team that scored 41 points vs Tech could suddenly emerge.

I'm as guilty as anyone of placing too much importance of sports in my life. It's a great diversion from the day to day grind of life (maybe especially true given the two shitty years we have all dealt with). The thing I always try to keep in mind is "how the players + coaches feel" after an unexpected loss to a Richmond or a Creighton. I invested 2+ hours of my life. They have invested much much more. We have zero control over the outcome of any game. They have enormous control, and I'm sure have to deal with a lot of "what ifs". Anyone who has competed in a sport, or coached a team can relate. You can second guess yourself to death.

Finally, the best line I heard over the weekend came from a losing coach. I can't recall who it was or what team they coached. A reporter asked a dumb question about "how difficult this loss will be for them". His response put a lot of this into perspective - paraphrasing here: "this isn't difficult - the people in Ukraine are going through a difficult situation - we will be fine".

Anyway, sorry for the long post. Let's just keep things in perspective. This is a game played by college kids. A game we have no control over. Just try to watch + enjoy. Easier said than done, but it makes it more enjoyable.

TJ had at best a decent season with a couple lucky wins in the tourney. Fran has built a very good program. If the great TJ can eclipse the elusive 40% conference win percentage next year maybe it’s worth a conversation. But until then Iowa State is basically St Peters - a tourney novelty, but far from a top program. Iowa isn’t a top program either but the trajectory is much clearer than ISU.

huh? NCAA Tourney been this way for 7 decades?

It is called parity in the sport.

It is one and done and what makes advancing so hard.

The last National Champion who was really a lower seed to win the NC was maybe UConn? 2014? Think they were 6 seed?

You would prefer double elimination? ISU lost to that UConn team in S16 by 4-5 points..without Niang Who broke foot. ISU gets another shot they could easily win and win NC themselves.

Quite sure they would have beaten Hampton if they played again.

Works Both ways.

aside from that this is only way to do it. It would take 2 months with your way.

I hate ISU. But past 10 years...20 years..ISU program been far far better..and it isn’t close.

4 Sweet 16’s..4-5 conf tourney titles...Dozen nba players Last 10 years.

40% conf record? Means nothing. Big 12 was the best conference. I can admit that.

Couple lucky wins? Winning in NCAA tourney is damn hard. Match ups and Luck are part of every single game..in any sport.

but past 20 years or so one thing is clear. Guards and defense wins in the NCAA.

Yup. Rational, fact based decision making has always been my downfall. I’m trying to inject more emotion and raw reaction since those usually lead to superior outcomes.

Seriously though, two weeks ago would you have traded Iowa’s program for Iowa State’s? If so you’re like one of eleven people on earth who felt that way.
