*****Iowa vs Tennessee Game Thread*****

The saddest thing of all, coming into the game, I never would have expected the Hawks to be on the wrong side of a 35-0 asskicking.

Yes, I know the offense sucks harder than a massive blackhole, but not even a garbage time FG??

KF & Fran have instilled a severe case of apathy towards Hawkeye fall & winter sports in me these past 1.5-2 years.

Hiring a new OC is not going to change much, IMHO. It’s still Kirk’s offense, he pulls the strings, he has shown a total disability to effectively use the transfer portal.

Not optimistic.
This is entirely it. Everyone is fretting over who the new OC is, but until KF retires, the guy getting paid to "run the offense" just Doesn't. ****ing. Matter.

The only thing that's going to improve or "fix" Kirk's excuse for an offense is by installing player personnel that can do the very simplest of tasks required of them. IE; an OL that can block ANYTHING at all, a QB that isn't the worst in all of football, WRs that can actually catch the ****ing ball, etc.

Or Kayla Burton in a hot tub.

Just a reminder of where Iowa was a year ago. 10-win season, gained 1,222 more yards PUNTING than offense, scoreless (0-92) against three ranked teams, hopeful that a new OC would right the ship. Has that happened?

Some genuine hawt takes up in this here thread after getting clubbed like a baby seal by Tennessee. Worth a scan as we contemplate Monday’s game.

Oh, and Kayla Burton.

Well in his defense, the offense did improve. The scoring went from 18th to eigth in the B1G. With respect to the passing game, he was still stuck with Cade and a receiving room that would rank near last in the B1G. The offense wasn't broken in a day. It wasn't getting fixed in a day. The portal performance is pretty discouraging, but let's see what progress can be made in year 2.

The offense was definitely improved. Couldn't be much worse than the prior 3 seasons.

Formations seemed to help the running game.

Not sure where you’re going here. I’ll absolutely give credit to Lester for somehow developing a running game with still bottom 3-4 passing game in the conference. Bowl game will be interesting without Johnson as he basically was our entire offense. The last time our QB played against UCLA he took some shots and got knocked out of the game.

So, just a minor clarification here. It's not bottom 3-4 passing game in the conference bad. It's last in conference and bottom 4 in the entire country bad. I agree that it will be interesting. Sullivan has probably had more time to practice with the ones over the last month than he's had during his entire tenure so far at Iowa. He's going to have to make plays with his arm and his feet. If he can it will help to alleviate some of the angst associated with the lack of portal success.

It was supposed to provide context as we approach tomorrow’s bowl game. Despite 10-2 versus 8-4 this year, are we any better off than we were a year ago when we got killed by Tennessee?

The question remains.

No more Deacon Hill, means there's at least some improvement.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around Kirk seeing Deacon Hill play 3 quarters in the Big Ten championship game, be responsible for multiple turnovers, and then decide to keep playing him for the remainder of the conference championship game.

Then, even though he has a month (or so) to prepare Marco Lainez for a bowl game, he decides to stick with Hill as the starter???

Let's see how that turned out:

0.5 QBR!!! I didn't even know a QBR less than 1 was possible.

Evidently, Deacon Hill got worse in the month between the bowl game and the Big Ten championship game.

The high point and only real positive moment of the bowl game was when the "unprepared" Lainez came in and ran for a couple of first downs, such that he ended up being the leading rusher for the game.

Just a reminder, Deacon Hill's best transfer portal option was FCS Utah Tech. And then after transferring to said FCS program, he was unable to hold on to the starting job.

I thought Sullivan was out due to injury towards the end of the year. How long was he able to practice with the 1s?
