ISU loses to S Dakota St

Despite how much some worry about every single game on the schedule, Iowa St is just about the least of Iowa's worries this year. That game will be as 'tough' as a home game vs N'western or Nebraska. The B1G teams will probably be tougher outs.

The Cyclones couldn't hang with Iowa, @ Hilton, when they had Haliburton last season. They're basically the same, only without Haliburton this year. Add in a healthy JBo this year, vs the gimpy one last season.

Let me put it this way, I'd be more concerned about a matchup vs (currently) 0-3 UNI than I am about the game vs ISU.

Hard to see Foster being a one and done if he can't even see the floor. Yikes. He can't be that unprepared for SDSU nor can the ISU starters be that much better to warrant his bench warming.

There is a difference playing high school ball at the 3A level in Oskaloosa and D1 ball with the big boys which ISU hasn’t even come close to playing against. Wonder if Xavier is asking himself about that question he was asking himself regarding Iowa basketball vs the ISU program I’d currently at.

Does Prohm survive to see next year if the season is another epic failure? I’d think so during this pandemic year due to budget constraints.

To be fair, Foster didn't look that great against the 3A boys last year but he wasn't probably recruited for hs numbers anyway. He was probably evaluated based on AAU ball.

Is ISU so talented that they don’t need a 5 star 7 footer on the court? Must be either that or Foster is not ready or not good.
Foster has always been considered a semi-project, including by himself, if you read his comments during the past year.

ISU is not good. SDS is pretty good. I was pleased and a little surprised that ISU came back to make a game of it. Shot 4-23 beyond the arc and trailed by double digits virtually all game, down 16 midway through the second half, cut it to a point in the final minute.

Looks like a team with 7 newcomers that didn't practice because of the pandemic. Question isn't how they'll do in the early season. We all know the answer to that. Question is whether they'll get better.

No offense Lone but doesn’t Iowa State have 7 newcomers every year now? I get bringing in a grad transfer as needed but you can’t keep losing 3-4-5 guys every year and trying to replace them.

Tough to get so many new guys to mesh. There's usually a lot more to the story when kids transfer or start moving to other schools. Some times a HC hits the lottery. Most times things don't work out. Prohm isn't Freddie.

I don’t remember Foster being called a project. I remember him being called a program changer and a must get for the Hawkeyes. I was doubtful he would be that good because of his relaxed attitude. He has some amazing skills for a player his size. It shocks me he is not a bigger part of the isu rotation. I wonder if it is a case where he doesn’t want to work.

Per Kenpom, ISU is #70 and SDSU is #79. Not sure I agree with the assessment that one is pretty good.

How many recruits that were rated as high as Foster are projects?

Take a look at big men each class that are rated around where Foster was (66th overall in the class).

They usually don't produce much their first year.

I can’t confirm, but someone on Reddit said Foster liked this post:

Also apparently is liking other posts that criticize Prohm.

yikes

Agree with all of this. We all knew ISU was going to be rough this year with seven newcomers seeing minutes and limited practice. The season is about what I expected after the first two games. Hopefully the newcomers start to get comfortable as the year progresses. The game against Iowa will be a bloodbath.

Not everyone knew ISU was going to be rough this year, right @Hayes_30 ?

I watched that game and...yikes, ISU has a bunch of guys that would be scrubs for us, starting. They don’t have any good rebounders. No good shooters. Their best scorer in the game vs SDSU was Solomon Young, and his post up shot won’t translate in P5 play against good bigs. I figured they might be a bunch of athletic freaks that lack basketball skill, but I really can’t even give them that. Looks like Prohm drove this program over a bridge.

Yours is a good assessment of ISU basketball this season. Iowa has 5 newcomers, but none are expected to be major contributors. ISU’s 7 newcomers are basically the core of the team. It’ll take time for the Clones, but they’re going to improve as the season goes along. They have a lot of good pieces.
Foster will eventually be a decent-good player. I’m not sold on his NBA future (although, 2 games really isn’t much of a baseline), but he’ll be a fine college player. I’d certainly be happy if he chose the Hawks.

Are you telling me that "practice" is the issue with a team starting a 4th year Junior, 4th year Senior, 3rd year Junior, 6th year Senior, and 3rd year Junior? Seriously, is this the excuse?
