can somebody explain why third place pool teams can still advance?

I know there are only 6 groups but this feels strange to me!

It's b/c they greedily and foolishly expanded the field. It used to be 16 teams...way more competitive. No patsies.
Now there are 24 teams, and North Macedonia is one of them. Ay Caramba!

yeah at least nobody big is left out though. One thing I’ve always liked about the Euros is every team truly does belong in the tourney… maybe that’s changed now.

I don’t follow rankings that closely but I can’t imagine wales is that great either.

I was surprised to hear England is one of the favorites? Harry Kane and their other strikers are scary but do they have a good enough defensive backfield to compete with the attacks teams like France, Belgium, Germany, et al bring ?

Today's Match: Turkey vs Italy, from Rome @ 3PM ET

(Opening Ceremony at 2PM ET on ESPN)

I love the Euros!

I think England's backline is not elite but pretty solid with several good options (RB being the best in terms of guys who can join the attack). The one thing they're missing though is anyone who's an obvious fit or would even be a decent option in the Kante role. As is usual, I think they'll fail to establish control in the midfield against the top sides and again be undone by below average goalkeeping.

England is often thought to suffer from Big-Ten-in-the-NCAA-tournament syndrome (aka "the regular season is so hard that by the time we reach the end we are beat up").

Without opining on anything you said, I absolutely love that it's now increasingly being referred to as some derivation of "the Kante role."

So well deserved!

The best comment on that came from the last guy who had the position named after him...

"People talk about the Makelele position, but I am old and it is time everybody called it the Kante position. N'Golo deserves that," (Claude) Makelele was quoted as saying. (that was 4 years ago)

High praise!

It's hard not to like France but my pick to win is going to be Belgium, I just think they're due to breakthrough and get the big one they've been missing.

My under-the-radar pick to impress and run deep would be Turkey. They lack the star power but have experienced leadership and could even surprise with a result today.

I can't settle on a pick to win it all. Just hoping for a great tournament with lots of late entertaining football for the neutral watcher.

I'm supporting England though, officially, but only on the basis that they have Bukayo Saka in their squad. If he wasn't there, I'd probably be supporting Belgium, as De Bruyne is my favorite non-Arsenal player in World Football.

Some of these teams really are not better than the USA. Also, Lukaku is Belgian? Yeah....uh huh sure.

And the 2nd goal...a poach from Ciro Immobile.

Italy in control, 2-0 in the 67th minute.

Interesting stat:

Going for Denmark (my dark horse pick) and Netherlands by birth. Poland by choice. ^

I am in a six-person pool.

My teams are France, Poland, Wales, and Finland

Group stage -- 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, zero for a loss

Knockout stage -- 3 points for a win, 2 points for a PK loss, 1 point for an extra time loss, zero points for a regular time loss.

Can I change my answer? Italy looks really really good. Turkey is certainly no world beater, but they ripped through the Netherlands and Haaland’s Norway back in March. They have 3 starters in Lille.

Who did N Macedonia beat out? Greece?

there was a Nations League repechage so anyone not finishing top 2 in their group goes to a playoff if they win their nations league group. So they were playing Kosovo, Georgia and Belarus from the bottom level.

Good to see a nice crowd for Denmark vs Finland.

Switzerland is in a bad place now, they needed that 3 pts with Italy next.

Based on the earlier match, odds are good that the CONCACAF Gold Cup beats the Euros again on attendance this summer.

Minnesota U.F.C have two starters for Finland...

One of the worst things to happen to a player, and one of the best players in the world too, as if it weren’t shocking enough.

EDIT: It was a stagger and collapse without contact. Even more troubling.

Good thing these idiots stuck to tradition and brought a stretcher out on the field and did CPR for 8 minutes when a golf cart to an ambulance to the hospital could’ve happened in half the time
