*****Quincy vs Iowa (EXH) Game Thread*****

I think we're all a bit too over-jaded by the football offense - or complete lack thereof, lol - when looking at things from watching/reading about a preseason exhib. bball game and prognosticating the season based off just that.

For instance, the comments about allowing Quincy to score 76 points. How is that, in any way, the least bit surprising or unexpected? Other than that final 2.25 month stretch to finish the regular season, and BTT, of the Murray's sophomore/JBo's final season, when has a Fran-led Hawkeye bball team ever been the slightest bit good defensively, let alone on a consistent basis??

I personally am going to wait until after at least 2 to 3 in-season games - even with the competition just of the creampuff variety - before I start to begin forming an opinion of determination on whether this season will turn out to be a total bust or not.

Just watched the first half. Krikke is a taller less athletic Rebraca. But he’s a good passer, I think we will see a lot of the offense run through him. Generally impressed with the freshmen, they look the part.

Brock is tiny, reminds me of Brody Boyd but a better ball handler and quicker. He’s going to struggle at times but he also seems to have a better feel for running an offense than Bowen. Dasonte is a consternation. Too many dumb turnovers, but the athleticism is there.

Pryce will be a bucket maker like his brother. I like the long term potential of the freshmen bigs.

I watched the same version. This team flunks the "eye test" in terms of being able to compete in the top half of the BIG.
Hope I am wrong.
As long as Fran is in love with Krikke and Patrick and gives them the most minutes, you're not wrong.
The Missouri Valley was the conference that was the right fit for Krikke. Playing most of the Big Ten teams he's going to be struggle both offensively and defensively and Patrick is going to wear down at some point during the season. That's just the reality of his situation.
And by the way, Patrick cutting his hair short is creepy, makes him look like a taller Connor. JMO. And his no Connor.....

its hard to learn much from an exhibition vs a team like Quincy. however, if we continue to shoot threes and FTs like we did, things could get really ugly.

Iowa 3 point shooting:

4-5 (80%) Pryce Sandfort
3-15 (20%) Rest of Team
.................................
7-20 (35%) Overall

Free throw shooting:

4-9 (44%) Tony
2-5 (40%) Owen
22-27 (81%) Rest of team
...................................
28-41 (68%) overall

check out these 2 videos:

The pass that Dasonte threw was bad, but I actually think Ant is wrong in saying he needed to hit him a step earlier--Dasonte waited until he was bodied up with the defender which acts as a semi screen, almost like a rub route that receivers run in football. If Dasonte just makes a better pass into the shooting pocket, Payton is still wide open there with the closest defender needing to go around Bowen. If he hits him as early as Ant wants, the defender doesn't have to go around Bowen to close out. Either way it's still a 3, but it really isn't as late as he is claiming. Bowen just needs to throw a better pass.

Patrick probably shouldn't be seeing many minutes at all if we're being brutally honest.

I think Bowen has quite a bit of talent but isn't a true point.

Brock is probably going to struggle this year with defenders who are bigger and more athletic than he is but he'll probably have a lot of good moments too.
If Bowen is not a PG, where exactly do you see him playing? He certainly is not a shooter and he's not big enough to be a wing. He's also not a "scorer" like Perkins. It's PG or bust for him IMO.

Yep, was just about to say the same thing.

The most basic principle of a fast break is don't let one defender guard two players, force the defender to commit to stopping the ball, then pass.

The pass was just atrocious.

I think Bowen will prove to be better at getting to the rim than Perkins , (thats his best skill from what ive seen)but will he be a better finisher I don't know.

He's not a true pg and neither are Dix or Perkins. Brock is.

I don't know what pg or bust means.

But what I am positive of is college basketball is a guard dominated game and the more successful teams usually have multiple ballhandlers on the court together.

Perkins best asset is his pull up mid range game. I don't see Bowen having that. I simply feel that Iowa will have better options than Bowen if it does not work out at the PG for him. I sincerely hope it does because I like the way he can push it up the court. But if Perkins and Bowen are in the backcourt together, you had better see the two Sandfort's in the game as outside shooting will be feeble at best without them and teams will just pack the lane.

I agree with the majority of what you're saying but the only thing I'd say is I feel like he could be on the court with any combination of Perkins Dix and Harding and wouldn't necessarily need to be the main ballhandler.

Generally I feel like having 2 and preferably 3 solid ballhandlers/guards on the floor is a good thing.

Haha I made the same comment on Twitter. Great minds I guess.

I haven't seen enough of Bowen to conclude much. Last year, he was taken out of his game by physical pressure the few meaningful minutes he played. Since I missed the Quincy game, maybe that is the basis some have for saying he isn't a PG. It sounds like he had a bad game, and he definitely threw a lousy pass in the video above, which wasn't analyzed well IMO, as others have mentioned. He seems to be quick enough and can handle the ball. I think that whether he can see the court well and run an offense is still an unknown, until we see him play a few more games. So far, he has NOT shown that ability. I still hope he just hasn't settled into what he can do yet. Fran clearly recruited him as a PG, so he must have seen something.

I think he is a tweener but not sure of what he is between

Yeah the sample size with Bowen is still way too small.
I agree i think he is still finding his role but I am sure Fran will help him with that but it is also the one issue I have with the free flowing offense where everyone can make their own plays

He is incredibly athletic though and nearly threw one down

I am curious where this sudden "Bowen is not a PG" stuff is coming from. He is a LOT to prove, but if he isn't a PG, then Fran certainly misread him as a recruit. I don't think Bowen was a fallback recruit.

I don't think he was a fallback recruit either...in fact I believe that Fran was so desperate to get Bowen to come to Iowa, Fran went out of his way to lure Josh Ogundele to Iowa a year earlier, even though the big man was in no way Big Ten material.

Dasonte definitely was not a fall back recruit; Fran spent a lot of time recruiting him. Dasonte played one year in High School with Josh Ogundele

The timeline:

Fran offered on May 10, 2019.

IOWA was the FIRST
to offer Dasonte

Dasonte UNOFFICIALLY visited on Oct 20, 2019

Tues June 1, 2021 was the first day that official visits could occur in well over a year (because of covid).

Instead of visiting a new school, Dasonte took his FIRST OFFICIAL VISIT to Iowa the weekend of Thur June 3 - Sat June-5, 2021.

He committed to Iowa 4 days later, on June 9, 2021.

Don't know the validity to the Ogundele piece, but Bowen's dad and Courtney Eldridge are very close friends. As soon as Fran gave the promotion to CE up to an assistant, that recruitment was done. Bowen hasn't said that explicitly, but he did state that he knew he was always going to end up at Iowa which is why he never went to all of his scheduled visits. He wasn't that interested in going elsewhere.
