2024 Roster

Shouldn't Cruz be higher on the depth chart than Ybarra? Cruz was a much more heralded recruit, although he was 113/120 in high school, and I think size/strength was his sticking point for NCAA wrestling. He's had a couple years to workout and grow into 125, so he should be better, I guess.
Ybarra was a high level recruit as well. Possibly even higher ranked than Cruz.

I don't pay super close attention to specific rankings on recruiting boards and whatnot, but I remember Cruz being a top 10 overall kind of recruit and a big deal signing for Oklahoma, but I don't remember that at all for Ybarra. I'm sure he has some pretty impressive high school and junior accomplishments, all Iowa wrestlers do, but was he part of the elite of the elite? I don't remember that.

Dude. Thank you for making my point. Ybarra was NOT part of the elite of the elite.

At the time of his commitment he was #42 on the Flo big board. pretty darn far down the "elite" list - unless you're saying top 50 is elite???

He finished at #16, sure. But no one considered him elite. It was a bad class. Go ahead and look. He was sandwiched between Greg Diakhomalis above and Silas Allred below. NO ONE was considering him a future AA or champ. And hell, Willie - who is by FAR the better ranker, had him at #37. Does that sound like a consensus "elite" recruit? (willie had Diakhomahils at #36, btw)

No. because he wasn't. Ever

I consider wrestlers who win their who’s number one match and were ranked number one at their weight class for a significant amount of time elite, but the whole point of the post was that Ybarra was just as good a recruit as Cruz so I digress.

I hope you realize those Holiday Inn commercials are in no way meant to be taken seriously. As much as you have stayed there, I have a feeling I now know where your false bravado comes from!

This team really only has 2 question marks imo. 125 and 141 with Block. If both of them are fringe AA/AA's they really have no holes. 133, 157, 165, and 197 are all finalist possibilities. 149, 174, 184, and 285 should all AA at least. One or two champs and 6 or 7 AA is very attainable for this team. Injuries can change things, but this is a very salty lineup and a great dual team. We will see how good of a tournament team they are in March.
How do you see this lineup matching up with ISU this year?

125= 0-3
133= 3-3
141= 6-3
149= 6-6

165= 13-6
174= 16-6
184= 19-6
197= 22-6
285= 25-6

125, 141, 149, and 285 could go either way. Is Paniro going at 149 for ISU or Ech? Him vs Parco will be a good matchup. I think this dual will be close thru 149 and the Hawks blow it open in the back half. ISU always wrestles Iowa tough since BM and DSJ joined their staff. I think there will be one upset for each team before the dual is done. 285 is the match I am looking most forward too. I think BK puts the other HWTs on notice in this dual.

if he is a recent groom near the Hawks match, maybe he is still on the post Honeymoon euphora and he has no hips left for the match ??

I’m pretty sure Chittum majored Teemer last year

ISU lineup is in total flux right now. Dresser wants Ech at 141 (which I think happens).

so then you'd have:
Ech 141
Paniro 149
Chittum 157
That is why it is so tough to predict the dual. I have no idea who ISU will wrestle at half the weights (just guesses at this point). They could have a very solid lineup or a pretty weak one depending on who goes where and who RS. Hell, nothing is set in stone yet for Iowa!

Christian Carroll is good but we could be looking at bonus from 65-84. Gaitan is going 65, Riggins 74, and Boeckman 84. Maybe riggins can keep it close due to familiarity.
Braxton Amos was really good in high school too, but too big to be effective at 197. I have the same expectation of Carroll at this weight until I see otherwise. When’s the last time he competed at 197 or lower? He will also be going against the #1 rated 197. Early season, cutting too much weight = not good.

CC has some really good wins including over Cass and Warner. His first time down at weight he got 3rd at u23, with a loss to Voelker who got smoked by Cardenas. I’m not saying he’s going to beat Buchanan but he’s a little more proven than their 65-84.

No, no, no. He wrestled 92kg at U23. 197 is 5.5 more lbs down. That’s not insignificant. And yes he lost to Voelker who’s ranked (checks notes) 17. He is 0-1 in college with his 1 match being a MD loss against Nitzel from Missouri. At this point he’s a fringe qualifier until we see otherwise.

Not at all worried about isu this year. Right now I have it 8-2 Iowa. Worse case 7-3. With this team I am only worried about psu and I truly believe we have a punchers chance at beating them. Call me crazy or whatever you want but I like this team a lot and think they can make a serious run.
