****Gonzaga vs Iowa Game Thread****

This Gonzaga team is loaded

They are good, but Suggs is the difference maker. Defend him better and they are beatable. I could see Iowa beating down Gonzaga in NCAA tourney if they learn from this. Iowa came out too soft on defense and mentally. Garza only guy ready. He can't win a game all by himself facing double teams.

Few is a good coach. Iowa is taking the bait with Nunge and Joe T chucking shots

Yep.

You have to be intentional about who takes shots.

Just because Jack Nunge is open doesn't mean he should be shooting jumpers.

We have way to many good shooters for Gonzaga to take them all away if we're patient but they're baiting Iowa into taking the wrong shots.

Agree they need to get ON Suggs... his aggression in the first 2 minutes seemed to make them more hesitant.

No blaming the refs from me......Hawks just plain stink today.

Not sure how you can just away at those atrocious calls on Iowa... haven’t seen the same go against Zags yet. Contrary to what you and the guy you replied to believe, unbalanced refereeing can significantly alter a game.

This game will come down to the wire.

Gonzaga's fatigue will likely set in 2nd half

Definitely not luck as GU has scored 50+ pts in a half multiple times this season.

Iowa too good of a team, 3pt shooting, and elite big man to not make this a game.

Have a feeling it will be tied or within 5 with less than 5 to go.

Book it.

These teams are Top-5 for a reason.

They bump and hand check all the way in from 30 feet, and then call the push off on Joe T.

That is why zone sucks. Man defense you can body guys all you want on defense, just don't reach.
Zone, you are just sitting back and letting teams fire up 3pt shots and you can't rebound effectively.

I don’t think the reffing has been that bad, but not having Fredrick for most of the first half hurts bad

Self-imposed penalty. How often is Fredrick ever in foul trouble? He'll probably end the game with 3 fouls. But no, Fran insists on sitting anyone with 2 fouls for the rest of the half which means we go without one of our best players for the last 13 minutes of the first half. We were only down 1 when Fredrick was sent to Fran-purgatory.

Iowa is good, but I don't know if they are 15+ points better than Gonzaga in the second half good. I hope they prove me wrong.

I like this team to GET BACK UP from this punch in the 2nd half

I hope so. They need to show some competitive pride.

The biggest issue is the shot selection. Bad shooters are taking quick shots, which is allowing Gonzaga to get out and run. The fact Gonzaga is killing Iowa on the boards speaks to effort.

Nunge played well if he had not forced those threes. He is not the best three point shooter on team.

I don't think Fredrick, JoeW, JBo were mentally ready for this game. '

This is the problem with Fran. He doesn't force his guys to play hard enough on defense and relies too much on zone. It isn't hard for a Div1 shooter to get hot when they get wide open looks. They sagged off Suggs too much and let him get hot.
You realize he has been shooting 2 steps behind the NBA line right? If Iowa defenders step out to guard it is an automatic 2 when he puts it on the deck. He will cool off from 3 if he keeps shooting from there.

There’s been a few obvious travels not called and a couple of plays that were called a foul at one end and let go at the other.

The way Gonzaga is shooting (and Iowa for that matter) they’re not making a difference, no.

All things considered that could have been allot worse.

If Gonzaga finds their level percentage wise they should be due for allot of 3pt bricks next half but Iowa has to rebound much better and be much smarter on offense.

Geez, it's like some you guys have never watched a basketball game.... Game of runs, Iowa needs to go on one to start the half and they'll be right back in this thing.

Gonzaga is shooting the three the way Iowa's been shooting the three to start the year.... Unconsciously. If they keep that up, yeah the game is over but they start missing and Iowa starts making, it'll be good game yet.

Iowa needs both aspects to be a great, championship team....consist Garza and knocking down three's, they're not doing the latter at the moment and with the Zags hot shooting it looks way worse than it is.

There is no place for reason here sir.

Iowa isn't quick enough to keep up with most teams in man to man though, which is why they do zone. But they can't just sit back and let the Zags shoot 85% from 3 point range all game either. So they are going to have to changes something.

Yes. Big picture, Iowa getting it taken to them is a good thing.

Gonzaga has already made more 3s in this game than previously in the entire season. If a team beats us by hitting 66 percent from the 3, I’m not going to sweat it. Refs aren't helping either.

Agree, one awful missed travel on Suggs but overall not bad.

Iowa is killing themselves on offense.

And when they called the offensive foul on Joe T when he's the one that got fouled.

But officiating isn't the reason we are down. Missed shots, defensive effort, and Suggs shooting out his ass are.

This reminds me of last years Purdue games. I wonder if they didn't decide to watch that film.

Down 14 but I think we still have a great chance. Gonzaga can’t keep shooting at that pace and we will heat up. Gonzaga’s lack of playing will likely catch up with them in the second half. I say we pull it out.
They kinda remind me of Michigan State. They make calls tough on officials because they run that line just enough and disguise it well enough to convince the officials to swallow their whistles.

They're a bit handsy on defense (though not like MSU or Wisconsin), but also ultra aggressive rotating and guarding tight, which is an intentional thing meant to show up your opponent, which is also not always their normal effort. (MSU does that a lot too).

They are certainly well-coached. Their rotations and doubling on defense. The ball movement on offense. They know what they want to do and where to go, especially against Iowa's zone.

You see the quick multiple extra, even unnecessary passes to find not the first wide open shooter, but the second and third, which ends up making Iowa's trash zone look like it's a 3 year-old chasing a leaf in the wind.

That's where good MSU teams had killed us. By making our slow, reactionary zone look silly.
