Helene was a tropical storm on 9/24, On 9/26 - two days later - it was a land-falling Cat 4. Why don't you find that "cycle", dumbass?

The Saffir Simpson scale became operational fully in 1975 (developed in 71) - but earlier models and methods have been around since 1851, and at first relied on early equipment and reports of eyewitness accounts and visible damage from high water marks.
There were storms prior to that of course but only historical records of Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch sailors who managed to sail out of the storms.
The frequency and severity of the storms is therefore not known and it cannot be determined with absolute certainty that man is the cause of the current patterns.
The catastrophic storms of earlier times like the extremely severe hurricane that hit Galveston Texas in 1901 likely existed but hit in still unpopulated parts of the southern coastline. Therefore they were far less impactful and newsworthy.

Correct. If it hits south of Tampa winds will be offshore, pushing water out of the bay.

So if it is a hurricane 5 right now but weakens into a Cat 3 for landfall would that make the surge worse coming in with crazier waves? Or do the waves somewhat dissipate due to it being out so far from shore?
