Hurricane season has arrived....

Yes it is. Ol’ Trad put on a trolling clinic the past few days. He showed Ryan, Bins and WDD how it’s done. This was vintage 2005 Trad level trolling.

How high above sea level? How far from the coast?

Wife’s friend is taking her kids and dog to stay with a friend inland. Her husband is staying at the house. They used to be on Treasure Island, I think they’re across the bridge from Madeira beach now.
He’s dumb to stay. They had water in their house and he was trying to rig the kids’ beds to float for Helene.

"he was trying to rig the kids’ beds to float for Helene."

Is this a joke?

Although it didn't hit Florida, Hurricane Camille made landfall on the Gulf Coast of southern Mississippi in 1969. As you can see on the graphic, it traveled several hundred miles across the southern states and went back out to sea off the coast of Virginia and redeveloped into a tropical storm. Camille kind of set the standard for what a really bad hurricane was until the last 25 years or so. Two of my friends rode this storm at their aunt's house in southern Mississippi. This storm had a 24 foot storm surge which killed hundreds of people who failed to evacuate. I think a lot of people saw it as a party event, sadly. It was recorded as the first CAT 5 storm to hit the US, although there were very bad storms which hit Galveston, TX and the Florida Keys decades before when the rating system had not been created yet.

Now, Hurricane Andrew in 1992 did exactly what you asked. It hit south of Miami as a CAT 5, traveled across the peninsula into the Gulf, strengthened again, and caused a lot more devastation when it hit the Louisiana Coast on a second landfall.

Camille caused massive flooding and a number of deaths near my Uncle’s house north of Charlottsville, Va. Far inland from Mississippi.
That, as you say, was the modern standard others were measured against until, I guess, Andrew and Katrina.

I-95 heading north from Daytona through Jax is backed up. A 20 minute trip from StAug to Jax was taking an hour. Once I-4 merges into 95 at Daytona it starts getting heavy traffic.
People on FB are urging locals and natives to revert to the old back state roads and US Highways and stay off the Interstates so newcomers can use them since that’s all they know.
Georgia has issued a notice telling evacuees where there are hotel rooms and campgrounds including the RV Parking at the Atlanta Speedway.

Son and family left St Pete beach area this morning at 5:00 for Orlando. Said driving was challenging to say the least.
Did what they could to prepare the house, but surge will determine the worst.
Does not know what to expect when they return.
Niece in Spring Hill is leaving for a friend's place in Georgis.
Another friend who lives north of Ft Meyers is staying put. Don't know what she's thinking but her choice.

Hope she’s a few miles inland. 😳

In-laws owned a condo on Longboat for decades. Sold it a few years back, but we still visit the area. The island was already struggling after Helene. This one will be devastating for Anna Maria/Longboat. Not sure how they come back from this.

I have a co-worker who has a big family vacation in the same rental house on Anna Maria every year. Wonder if it'll still be there on Thursday?
