Hurricane season has arrived....

Ahh yes.... He's saving Florida from the leftist Federal government by declaring to the populace that he, not those home-stealing FEMA leftists, is in charge . Totally sane and rational, and not in any way destructive.
I don't live there but I do have family and friends there and we have a timeshare that got hit by both storms (Treasure Island). I'm in a lot of local facebook groups to keep up on stuff in the area. Whether it's legitimate or not, the concern among people is real about your property being in jeopardy if it's beyond 50 percent damaged. Two days after the hurricane the treasure Island building department was going around giving letters to everybody threatening fines if they didn't get demolition permits. Let's just say the populace was pretty pissed off when the building department comes by to run salt in your wounds as you're trashing out your home wondering what you're even going to do next while you have no home, water, or electricity.

Its pretty clear they're trying to build as big a record of damage values as they can. That's how I learned about that FEMA thing in the first place. So ya, if I lived there and had extensive damage I sure as hell want my leadership to tell me they've got my back in case that may happen.

Our place and those of of friends and family are all fine and not in any danger of this happening, so I can say as an unbiased observer that people whose homes are in shambles are genuinely worried about that, and I'm glad someone is supporting them.

So wait a minute. Was it the local building department or FEMA that gave out those notices?

Preferable to Katrina when nobody seemed to know who was in charge until General Honore showed up.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin was quoted on a radio interview on September 1, 2005, saying: "Now, I will tell you this—and I give the president some credit on this—he sent one John Wayne dude down here that can get some stuff done, and his name is Gen. Honoré. And he came off the doggone chopper, and he started cussing and people started moving. And he's getting some stuff done."

It was local government. But the concern is that if you comply it's providing documentation for them to use in conjunction with FEMA (or FEMA alone) to strongarm you out of property so they can decide what to replace it with. Honestly if someone hadn't actually taken a picture of the letter and posted it I would have thought it was completely made up. It was two days after the biggest catastrophe the island had ever seen since people and that was their priority? It's beyond ridiculous to do that so there has to be an agenda.

Something to note here is that Treasure Island is actually it's own sovereign city unlike the other barrier islands that exist in name only. And there's some serious cronyism going on with the mini leadership and the people they appoint to run each of the one person departments. I've actually seen that happen while our condo complex was dealing with some permit issues for our gas line while I was down there one year. They put their meetings on YouTube and I've watch them sometimes for fun. There's some serious incompetent shit and borderline corruption that goes on down there and it makes me nervous for those that still have prime estate that got blasted.

Again, you're taking a notice from a local jurisdiction about demolition notices for badly damaged properties to rationalize shitting on FEMA which is what this was about.

The 'building department' would be the State of FL here.

FEMA has no interest in "trying to build as big a record of damage values as they can".

That would most assuredly be the local building "department" or State of FL here.

FEMA would not issue any such thing; you have to APPLY to FEMA to get $$, they don't run around handing out notices to gut your property to send you some check. Not remotely how it works here.

Of course it was.

And they are not doing anything "in conjuction with FEMA".
This is one of the biggest whoppers on here, claiming "FEMA wants to rack up big damage claims". You're nuts.

Building departments are local. For a municipality to qualify for federal dollars through FEMA, they have to show defined levels of damage. I would assume the city is trying to establish that line that ensures they will get assistance.

That is inconsistent, entirely, with the claim.

FEMA requires documented damage, and these areas are already declared disaster zones. Ergo: they already qualify.

That's almost normal now days. I-4 is normally clogged all the way between Orlando and Tampa even without evacuees all over the road.
At 2PM my wife called me because traffic on I-10 was “bumper to bumper” and she was afraid she wouldn’t get home to pick up the kids from school.
This is just coming from Quincy back to exit 209 on the east side.
That isn’t close to normal around here.

I know after Ian one of the Jax lab staff members that evacuated to Pensacola said the drive back took 13 hours.

**** each and every person who wants to play politics with this shit. I hope you all die tonight.
I have numerous friends who have lost their homes, had their businesses destroyed, or suffered significant loss over the last few weeks. I don't give a shit what party you are with, if you want to make political bones, pour gas on yourself and jump in a fire.

Pasco and Hernando Counties have issued a flood warning for the vicinity of Ridge Manor. Residents are being advised to LEAVE NOW and seek higher ground.
Anclote river finally rose over its banks. I was in Trinity today and it was a bit of a mess. Multiple road closures and a shit ton of water.

I filled up at Wawa at 5 am. The line was only 25 minutes.

Milton aftermath: Gas distribution after Port Tampa Bay power issues

I was born & raised there, about a mile from the river. Have a vacant ot on it now & kayak on it regularly. Went out to it Thursday; imagine the whole lot will be submerged when the river crests (expected to be tomorrow).

My sister and BiL left to head back home this morning. Reports from the neighbors said the house is fine but there is a mango tree down and a lot of oak limbs scattered everywhere. They still don't have power but they do have my generator and 15 gallons of gas. Hopefully, power will be restored soon.

Still believe he'd make a great president,.. The guy is a manager, not a salesman, so he comes off looking a bit unpolished playing politician,... My opinion is that we are drowning in politicians who cant' do shit,.. Time for a real manager who sucks as a politician.
Well you’re a moron, so you would think that.

Agree and the only thing this northerner asks is the next there is an event and the Mississippi floods, don’t argue against aid because dumb people built lives and businesses close to a river. This is not directed at you at all, just a sentiment I have.

Not arguing, just informing.

You appear to agree w/ me that the other poster's claims that FEMA is the Evil Empire behind properties being declared total losses.

That poster seems to be woefully misinformed on what can be "repaired" vs what needs to be "rebuilt".
