*****Iowa vs Ohio St (BTT) Game Thread*****

I’m not going to criticize Jan but even I said to my wife that we should have our three tallest women in because with .7 on the clock all we really had time for was a tip in. Also had H.S shot went in osu would have been screaming that time ran out. Do people realize how fast a half of a second is???

Just got home from the game - why do they issue the refs a whistle if they aren't going to use them?
Total fouls called in the game:
22.

9 on Iowa.

13 on Ohio State.

Iowa shot 8 free throws. Ohio State shot 7.

What announcers call a “physical game” with “a lot of contact” but few fouls called.

I agree with the announcers. Physical game. Both coaches complaining about calls because that’s what they do. I’d rather they let them play like they did last night. Iowa is not a soft team. Our girls will fight and scrap with anyone. Ohio State had more fouls than we did. 1 possession game. Can’t ask for much more than that. I’m not going to blame the refs, the coach or anyone. Guess what? Sometimes you just lose a hard fought game. We held them to 36% shooting. Great defense but needed a little more production from a few other players.

...and make more than 50% of our layups.

What a loser...adds to my disrespect of her....

“I’m not gonna get into it all the way, but let’s just say they’re a little disrespectful as far as how they view us. So we take that personal. I take that personal,” McMahon said. “I like to fight on the court. I’m very — I have that dog in me, so I go out there and prove it.”

Jan has turned the team around but she has been bad at drawing up plays in the most important late game situations.
My confidence in those situations is less than 17%. Pretty bad all season. I think Jan is the type that will work on this for next year. We've already seen less lob passes. She's adjusting and learning. Some coaches seem too stubborn to change, so it's refreshing to see her change as the season has progressed.

I told my wife during the first half that all the Iowa missed lay-ups (while contested) would come back to haunt them in a close game. I think Iowa players missed 3 or 4 lay-ups in the first half.

Also to be fair since the women play below the rim so much what we consider layups aren’t as easy as in the men’s game. And I know they say we missed 14 “layups “ but pretty much everyone was a contested shot. And again, OSU shooting 36% is probably saying the same thing.

1. Hard to be too upset. Was going to be extremely difficult to win 5 games in 5 days, and the reward for another win or two would be what, getting to a 5 instead of a 6? Not much of an advantage. Though maybe a 4 was in the cards if we did win the tournament.

2. Affolter got fouled on her drive worse than Stuelke fouled McMahon (if she did at all). The mistake was in Stuelke choosing to fall down. The refs feel they have to blow their whistle in that situation and they weren't about to give us another charge call.

3. I can't find much fault with the final play with 0.7 seconds. We ended getting an open mid range look that almost went in, which was better than I was expecting, especially after the refs gave OSU a preview of what we were trying to do.

4. Anyone know what exactly McMahon is referring to?
3. I really think everyone is considering the SA drive was the real final play. I could be wrong, but don't think most complaints are regarding the .7 play. Almost everyone realizes that .7 means any makable shot is a good one in that situation. Maybe I'm giving everyone too much credit.

Not a lot to complain about. I will maintain Ava should've been in. I would also liked to have seen ogrady in for the 15 foot option on both final plays. Make layups we win... Players fault

Not using fouls in 3rd qtr... Players and coaches fault

Horrible officiating the last couple of possessions. Have to call the foul on SA after giving OSU the freebie just before.

We fought all game to be in a position to win. It came down to that final 6.7 possession. Hate to be a Monday morning quarterback, but subbing in AOG for a optional 10 foot jumper would have giving Affolter a one-on-one drive to the basket or, if doubled, a dump off to AOG or Stuelke. As it was, positioning McCabe in the left corner made it easy for OSU to drop off her to double Syd.

If we need two with less than 10 seconds, AOG has to be in the mix - of course, IMO.

Well, I don’t have an opinion per se, but that is sound reasoning, and yet just another reason why it doesn’t make much sense for any of us to consistently be upset with the coaches, and I know you’re not right here, but you’re the first person that I’ve seen point this out. Everyone else wanted Ava in the game or this girl or that girl and that is an extremely valid point you made right there!

Thanks, I never would have thought about that alternative if you hadn't mentioned it. Would you consider your alternative materially different than the outcome we had? Since Stuelke ended up getting a somewhat similar shot at the end, anyways? Not saying it is or isn't. just Curious.

And if O'grady ends up with the shot that would be her third end of game attempt this year. At what point do say- someone else deserves that opportunity? Or, based on the previous 2 attempts, that's just not a spot that is setting her up for success? If she misses a third end of game shot- that's...tough to justify to the other players. Maybe they have killer O'grady play they are saving for the tournament. Odds are they'll have a chance to use it.

In these circumstances, foul called on the other end, getting no favorable whistle on your drive, and the ref giving the ohio state player a warning for holding instead of just calling a foul, I think the coach is damned no matter what unless the ball goes in.

Jan has consistently given these players chances to make shots to win games. I try to remind myself how many games I don't even see a legit shot attempt go off in this scenario.

Just spit-balling. That play could have worked. Coach's job is get the team in a position to win. Jan did that. Couldn't ask for a better look than HS had. I thought it was going in.

Still really bummed about the loss. It's not the plays at the end that haunt me as much as the kickout 3 attempt up 1 with 40 seconds to play. I'm guessing everyone would love a second attempt at that possession. Of course, if it went in, there is a good likelyhood it daggered a win. I DO think it's pretty great they were in position for that, leading in the last minute of play.

Crazy how much I was somehow mentally penciling in a game vs. UCLA today., like it was a foregone conclusion, but the reality truly is, if Iowa was more on than off with the shooting they were winning that game. Hopefully the entirety of the last few minutes is something the team can learn from, and maybe our big balance payoff is coming in a few weeks. The universe owes us some luck and love.
