*****Iowa vs Penn St Game Thread*****

After the first 5 weeks or so in football, I adopted TCU as my "other team" for just this year. I was super frustrated with the offense and was wanting to pick someone at random to watch. Maybe try that for hoops?
I think he’s lost them. Zero confidence. look at the body language.

Remember folks.....according to some posters on this board Fran is the best possible coach Iowa can have. If he is fired the program is guaranteed to go back to Lick level.
I'd like to know which coaches applied the last time around. Somebody came on here a while back and said McCaffery was by far the best of the applicants...wtf?

They will be lucky to beat NW once. They are a much better team than Iowa IMO
Yea, I think I'm going to rescind that already. I just looked up their season record and heard Decourcy at half, I think I'm wrong about that.

Revised: 3 (and could be 2 as one of MI or NW at home is no gimme) wins in the B1G season. Go Hawks!!!

Man, I feel bamboozled.

Or maybe I foolishly overdosed on the koolaid.

When you look at how they are playing/shooting individually, it makes a lot of sense.

PMAC, Sandfort, josh Dix--> the worst group of small forwards in the B1G right now. I agree Sandfort and
PMAC both might turn it around in 3pt shooting, but they are the worst in B1G right now because none of them can buy a basket and defense is so-so in Sandfort/Dix case to really bad in Pmac case.

Rebraca is below average center in B1G. Too small and not especially skilled.

Perkins is a shell of himself, below average B1G player right now.

Ullis is probably the worst PG in B1G at offense. Plays pretty good defense.

Kris Murray is obviously above average B1G player. CMAC is playing at level of a smart but mediocre below the rim B1G player right now. If most of your players are below average, you expect a bad basketball team. They look to be little bit better than Lickliter teams.
Too true.
I suppose Fran didn't expect Nunge and CJF to transfer and for Keegan to blow up and leave.
We'd be better with those guys.

We are dead. Put a fork in the Hawks

This team looks worse than the team when Tyler Cook and JBo were Freshmen. That team went 4-14 in B1G but at least they could score. They just didn't play defense. This team can't score as well as doesn't play very good defense. So good news, more well rounded in being bad.

Yes, if it were the 1980s with no immediate transfers, no portal, no nil, rare early nba entry---Iowa would be better. However Nunge/CJF apparently had own reasons to leave and it is Fran's failure to adjust to Portal/NIL that has meant filling holes in roster not being done.

Im ****ing sick of watching Patrick play.

Hes not a 3 on either end and just gets cooked every time down the court on defense.

No one else would be allowed to suck on both ends and continue to play so many minutes.

We have to go zone. Rebraca can't guard these guys and the help defense is non- existent.
He plays hard but he always opens up way too much. If every guy on the team would contain at least the first two dribbles, they would be so much better. Typically after one dribble they open up and let them go by.

His only rebounds are long threes that fly to him. Not sure I ever seen him fight block out or rebound in the paint.

Too many skinny non physical players. Psu’s freshman are already more physical looking.

skinny, not strong, below the rim, and in Sandfort case either a confidence crash or he has some undiagnosed medical issue...hopefully it is just mental with him. HE looked like a pure shooter last year.

I haven’t watched much Iowa basketball this season, but from what I’ve seen Murray is the only player who can create his own shot off the dribble. Perkins has that ability too but he just doesn’t look right.

Once again, Iowa has no point guard who can take guys off the dribble or create for others. There are also too many one-dimensional players who can’t contribute if they aren’t hitting 3s. Oh, and not a lot of guys getting after it defensively.

Fran has got to get better talent. It’s just that simple. I would keep Murray and Rebraca and that’s it.

Good timeout by Shrewsbury to put a stop on the lethargic PSU start. Fran wouldn't do that... That's what good coaches do...

I’m really baffled by PMac’s play. It’s crazy that of all the kids Fran has developed his own sons aren’t two of them.

on defense and rebounding.....PMAC could be best described as a day late and a dollar short. He lets guy drive by him and goes for the trailing block and almost never makes the block. Rebouding he stand outside the scrum waiting for the rebound to bounce his way.

Iowa down 13 at the 15.53 mark

PSU is shooting 59% for the game

3 point shooting

1-8 (13%) Iowa
8-14 (57%) PSU

2 point shooting

13-27 (48%) Iowa
12-20 (60%) PSU

Dix is not moving from the very end of the bench. I think he must have turned his ankle pretty good. He may be done for the night.

The good news is we have Sandfort and PMac to man the wing - LOL!

The way they’re playing now, they won’t win any. The team that opened the season and beat ISU would be competitive, but I don’t know what happened to them.
They were hyper focused for the ISU game. They have not even been close to being that focused since. When you are that focused, it is amazing how much better a team can play. Right now they look like they are going through the motions and have a defeated mindset.

Not a great year for Iowa men's Football and basketball. Maybe I'll donate some NIL money. They certainly need some talent upgrades.
