*****S Carolina vs Iowa (W) Game Thread*****

The worst part for me, is that CC's entire career will be summed up on whether she has a ring or not. Man, does she deserve better than that.
Only by idiots with some idiotic axe to grind. Lost in the shuffle is that Clark cemented highest per game scoring avg today with her 30 pt effort

She owns sooo many records, and has all the intangibles as well. Assuming she succeeds in the WNBA (and she should), this won’t be debated in just a couple of years

Except by idiots. There are ALWAYS idiots

Yeah, it’s too bad we didn’t have an extra day of rest. May not have made a difference but makes me wonder if we’d had fresher legs.
when you think about it, it is pretty stupid to play (Mand W) finals one day after semis and six games in a couple of weeks. Of course, the team with a deeper bench has an advantage. The NCAA is effing braindead. Iowa still would have probably lost but Iowa did have tired legs.

Bluder needs to figure out you cannot get by playing 6/7 players and one big all year and expect to win the big prize.

Clark only made 10 shots in the entire game, and I think only 5 shots over the last three quarters. Heck, she was only 5-15 from 2pt range. That will never get it done vs SC. She flat ran out of gas.

Clark has been getting hammered by many lately. I’d like to see her take the 10 mil and play the 3 on 3 then say eff you to the WNBA and all their carpet munching players and play overseas. Let the WNBA viewership suck some more.
All snark aside, it does seem like the WNBA would be a big let down. They just don't draw and it's not that exciting. Why do you think so many of the old guard resent all the attention CC is getting. They couldn't create that on the pro level.

The 12 WNBA teams averaged between 3,000 and 9,500 attendance last year. (the NBA was 16,000-21,000 with much higher ticket prices). There might be a bit of a bump next season, but it's not going to take off like the rocket that some think it will. The talk of expansion teams is way overhyped...it's not sustainable without funding support. This has been one hell of a season but people are fooling themselves if they think it's the new normal.

Number one is number one for a reason.

Top-ranked South Carolina entered Sunday's national championship game at 37-0 on the season and the Gamecocks had gone undefeated on the back of tremendous depth, length, and improved outside shooting ability. All three of those assets shone on Sunday as South Carolina dispatched Iowa, 87-75, to win a second national championship in the past three seasons.

Caitlin Clark, playing in her final game at Iowa, finished with 30 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists, but couldn't reproduce the exact magic that she had captured in leading Iowa to its 77-73 upset of South Carolina in the Final Four last season. Clark was held to just 12 points on 5-of-20 shooting over the final three quarters.

This is a big mistake IMO by Bluder. They should have been playing two bigs all year at times to prepare for the NCAA.
Well who sits then? Martin, who pretty much was essential to maintain the emotional center of the team or Marshall, who is the reason Iowa had a pretty good defense and could cancel out any high level guard in the country?

Depends on the situation. I said at times which means when opportunity arises just like any other substitute. Never said replace a starter.

Super for you. Maybe before you complain again about an Iowa player like Clark (you know the best offensive player in history) you should do some research. They said the other day that when they figure overall shooting efficiency, (true efficiency) which includes 2pt shot %, 3pt shot % adjusted against shooting 2's and free throws, Clarks season efficiency is 61%. Thats 61 PERCENT. The next highest player in college basketball at anywhere near her usage rate was 51%. Try to keep up....

Iowa staff ? Ya right. Best womens player in history who went up against every elite team by herself with role players. Bluder git her no help.
Bluder will get better players in the years to come. She will win a national championship at Iowa. I don't care whether you believe that or not.

So, she wasn’t getting lazy with the ball at any point tonight?

I think what's tough to swallow, but I think this was our last chance to hoist a national championship trophy, at least for the women. We'll never see another CC. The men are a trainwreck, and football is so disgustingly pay to play we have almost no chance.

Sucks so much.

CLEVELAND -- "It feels horrible, if I'm being honest," Kate Matin said when asked her emotions after Iowa's 87-75 loss to South Carolina in the national championship game. "I never want anybody to feel like this."

Losing sucks. Especially for a group that made it to back-to-back national championship games and couldn't quite pull off a victory in either.

"We gave our best effort," Martin said. "We left it all on the court. I don't have any regrets."

Iowa started the game on fire offensively, and took an early 20-9 lead. Then South Carolina began to chip away. The lead was just 27-20 at the end of the first quarter, and thanks to a late run the Gamecocks took a 49-46 lead to halftime. They largely controlled the second half on their way to the eventual 12-point victory.

Last year, South Carolina had the size, athleticism, and defensive intensity to dominate its opponents. The only thing the Gamecocks lacked was shooting. They were just 4-of-20 from three in Iowa's 77-73 upset win in the Final Four last year.

This year, coach Dawn Staley fixed that issue. The Gamecocks went 8-of-19 from three-point range and made plenty of other mid-range jumpers just as Iowa was making a run.

"There's a reason they're undefeated," associate head coach Jan Jensen said after the game. "We would've had to hit threes at a very high rate [to beat them]."

As hard as losing is, this Iowa team will be remembered for far more than two national runner up finishes.

Anyone pulling the excuse out that the problem was we were outscored by the bench players (and blaming them) should only look to our coaches on that......not the bench players. They were all ready to play during SO many of our Big 10 blowouts when we were up 20-30 points all of the 4th quarter chasing stats. But our staff wouldn't rotate the players to let our bench get some valuable playing time with the first team. Thinking down the road and also the next season, they did not plan for the future. These players could have contributed today (and other games) with confidence if they had more minutes throughout the year.

You make good points. I saw many of your games this year, but some were close so I will take your word. Staley intentionally plays younger players at the end of tight games. She also sits them when they are screwing up to show them they aren’t above the team. She does this every year, and then other teams use the excuse of not being as deep as the reason they lose to us. If you develop younger players, you help yourself. There’s a reason you signed them to a scholarship so if they can’t play, maybe it’s you as a coach? Not Bluder, just saying I watch coaches in late blowouts leave starters in….aka Mulkey

Staley has 8 5 stars. Iowa has 1. Other teams aren't as deep except maybe UCONN but they had a bunch of injuries. Iowa going to their bench is not the same as South Carolina.

If you could, give us some of your spare 5 star bench players so that we can win the national championship next year. You got your feel-good 2nd title in 3 years and an undefeated season.

Now it's our turn. Thanks in advance! 😀

SC fans love to act like their 5 star kids are just average players plucked off the street lmao. Those kids would get playing time for any P5 program, that’s literally what the 5 star designation means.

I'm still thinking about Iowa's shooting. Stuelke blew an easy layup and missed two FTs. Marshall missed a wide open three, Affolter missed two wide open threes, Martin missed three decent 10-15 footers, and Clark missed just about everything. If Stuelke makes the layup and FTs, Affolter makes just one of her threes, and Martin makes just one of her shots, that puts Iowa in the lead going to the last two minutes, even with Clark hitting nothing.

Any stats of women’s vertical jump?

Kind of thinking women’s verticals are all very poor and the height advantage by any tall girl with a decent skill set is almost impossible to overcome.

She was blocking shots and rebounding while flat footed. That’s a tough mountain to climb and nobody did this season.

Iowa needed to play a near perfect to win with Clark going for 40+.

It's a shame, this team deserved to win one of these. SC, UConn, LSU etc all have been there before and will again. This was our one window.

But hey, it's a heck of an achievement, and they were in the game with a fair shot. Walk tall, ladies.
