******UCLA vs Iowa Game Thread******

As far as officiating goes… They honestly really need to have a mandatory 40+ hours of schooling and observed work every season as far as I’m concerned.

I came in to the house to watch this game and the Tennessee versus Florida women’s game was on. I didn’t really have a rooting interest, but the TV was on in the front room and right that second a girl from Florida received a pass with their head turned & a Tennessee girl swooped in underneath her and they called it a ****ing charge.

It was such a bad call, without any interest in the game whatsoever, it actually pissed me off. I called my 20-year-old son into the room to see if I was the idiot… And he said nope I thought you actually had to be able to take a step and I said exactly.

And as others have said women’s officiating is the worst of the worst!

Take your pick lol.

I try to error on the side of people being human, but there has to be some sort of a process in the last two minutes in particular for a conclusive review. Lucy doesn’t fall unless she’s tripped, and she doesn’t trip if the girl doesn’t have her leg 6 inches outside the frame and moving into her.

Easy peasy…

I find it extremely interesting that USC and UCLA have beat almost everybody they played home and away by double digits, but one of them lost in Iowa city and the other one should’ve…..

I’m not even sure what it means. Clearly iowa is a tough place to play at, and clearly we have a decent team..

My guess is a new coach, a new staff, 4 freshman and the Srs learning to play without CC has cost us several games. I honestly don’t know what to expect in the tournament… Another close loss early on or can they get on a run?🤷‍♂️

Time will tell… But I think a case can be made that we are one of the three or four most capable teams in the league out but we just can’t consistently win… or at least enough I guess🤓

She ran tight to the screen. Don't thing the screener stuck her behind out, but Lucy could have gone under that screen since it was so tight.

Fran should be taken off the hot seat and replaced my Jan, imo.

Thoughts? ;)
Just no.
OT vs OSU, 2 point loss to UCLA, beat USC. News flash, Caitlin, Gabbie, and Kate are not walking back through the door. We knew this would be a rebuild year. With this year’s freshman class and next year’s recruits plus if we get another one or two 2026 recruits besides Ms Deal the Iowa women will be fine. Is Jan making mistakes. Yes, but honestly so did John Wooden and Bob Knight. These girls give effort and heart. Can everyone involved get better? Obviously, but let’s get some perspective please on expectations.

Meh…that’s what the men do…which is why their defense sucks 😂
But in this case she might not have gotten the foul. (Unless the blind ref blew the whistle).

I hope they get kidnapped and held in a cellar in Cuba for 20 ****ing years! I don’t have near the vitriol for men’s teams or even the football teams that I do for these ****ing women’s teams….

They’re petty, they’re catty and they’re just flat shits, Ohio State, Michigan State, UCLA, Nebraska, you could put their whole ****ing programs in a ship in the middle of the ocean, sink it to the bottom of the sea
i was trying to type hope those clowns AREN'T coming here to Indy for WBB B1G tourney. Lousy refs!

ummm, no. The ball handler actually did a terrible job setting up the screen. she left way too much space. There was plenty of room for the defender to go through. Thats why the screener had to extend out.

It should have been an offensive foul, and it would have completely been the ball handler's fault. It's a fundamental part of teaching the screen.

look closer and watch the last step with the right leg by the screener, it was blatant. That was not a hard call at all, and that ref was about 15 feet away looking right at it.

They won't say anything publicly of course, but there will be some discussions with that ref from someone in a supervisory position......because she blew that one big time.

FWIW…he was just having fun

Maybe the missed illegal screen call was as simple as the B1G wants two #1 seeds for the post season and this was a concerted effort to make sure UCLA doesn't have a second loss before the conference title game?

How's about next time we just ice the screen lol.

EDIT: Just saw a picture of the screen from another angle. I see clearly now that there should have been an offensive foul call there.

In a 2 point loss to #3 UCLA:

Iowa did an incredible job w/ limiting turnovers (just 8).

Iowa missed 12 layups (10-22), however.

Other key stats:

Turnovers:
14: UCLA
8: IOWA

Points off Turnovers:

9: UCLA
9: IOWA

Rebounding:
43: UCLA
34: IOWA

2nd Chance Points:

14: UCLA
16: IOWA

Free Throws:
14-20 (70%): UCLA
15-19 (79%): IOWA

Points in Paint:
34: UCLA
26: IOWA

Lucy stole the ball and shot it up on the left side with her right hand, and missed it. I wonder if players are taught to shoot a layup with the hand on the side of the basket they're on. I guess not.

Heard Jan's post-game interview on WHO radio. She was steaming mad at the shot selection in the 3rd quarter when we were up big and pissed it away. She didn't name names, but Feurbach took three terrible shots in a row and Jan pulled her out and was yelling at her pointing fingers at her head.

Her point was, we had the opportunity to bury them and instead took a series of horrible shots.

Bc white people immediately see the tan, hair color, eye color, if half Asian the eyes and immediately think of them as non-white. It’s not the half mixed raced person who doesn’t see themselves as half white.

I can believe that, I can. But it still seems like they always just associate with that sterotype as well....

Said the same thing to the wife during. KF took some really bad shots, and honestly Hannah was overwhelmed. Thought AOG handled her business. Still can't comprehend our more athletic 6'4" girl sitting on the bench the whole game, but hey, I'm not coaching the team...

Conceptually, I get your point, but it’s not true for everyone. I really had no clue Betts was black until I heard that statement about her thinking we were racist. I love tan/dark skin. I spent most of my life, into my 40s outside w/out a shirt on. And still hang out in the sun and have never had to wear sun screen…of course one day I’ll pay, I’m sure. But I don’t immediately associate anyone with “black” because of skin tone. Hell I never realized Gabbie had a black parent until she was a Sr. So I’m not sure what your point is, but that’s an attitude, not an ethnicity. At least for her 🤷‍♂️

I think the most surprising (or unsurprising) thing is that Iowa was called for fouls on two OSU illegal screens in OT of that game. So this is now the the second game in a row of screen collisions being called on the wrong team to tilt a game.

gosh, you learn that at basketball camp at a very YOUNG age

at this level, you'd think they'd be automatic in using their left hand on a left handed lay up

you rarely, if ever, see Ava missing a lay up, too
