******Kansas vs Iowa Game Thread******

The empty possessions with a lead continue to chip at the situational awareness, but hopefully that will resolve with game experience. A few makes here or there and they could have closed the door early.

Really good win, no matter how they got there. Kansas looked salty in the tourney last March. Keep it rolling!

I've seen enough to say that S'mya Nichols is a C-rate version of Ashley Owusu: her entire game was based around using a big guard body to bully her way into the midrange for cheap fouls. If she could actually get to the rim and/or pass she'd be a decent player.

I would have liked to see us maintain the 17 point lead we had built near the end of the 3rd quarter. Against good teams we won't win playing the way we played in the 2nd half. But I'll take the win.

I don’t think Iowa State’s guard court is strong enough… I’m not saying there were over ranked. I believe they have a very good team with an above average (not great) coach, that is front court heavy

As odd as it is to say about someone who scored 26 points. We D’ed her up pretty good.

Feuerbach is a big key for the Hawks this year.

Her defense is superb, has a knack for drawing charges She will easily lead the team in steals. A scrappy rebounder on both ends.

On offense, has shown ability to attack the basket (and draw fouls). More of a streaky shooter from the perimeter…. can/will make opponents pay if they sag too much. A decent ball handler.

Questioning her value is a bit silly IMO.

Well, we did lose not only the best get ahead passer in history, but one of the best defensive rebounding point guards in the country in #22.....

Yes…one of the best D-rebounding/get ahead passers in history really. I’m embarrassed to say I spent a lot of time on Twitter during the WNBA season. And her haters were always pissed about her “stealing rebounds“ but that is why she’s always late to the perimeter or I should say often late to the perimeter. (She got better as the season progressed)They deployed her there because of her ability to get the ball and get the hell up the court! At Iowa & for the Fever.

That does inhibit your defense… And we now have three girls, Afolter, Feurbach and Olsen who can grab the ball and go.

They aren’t Caitlin, but it will improve our defense for sure.

On a related note, her vision and passing in all aspects are why Paige & Watkins will never be CC. And I like both those girls, they have nice games but they can’t pull up from 28 foot and although they pass well, they don’t pass like her. Watkins is no point guard either. She’s a decent passer. She’s a 6-2 combo player.

I don't get why people think Feuerbach is such a good player. Yes, she guards well but other than that, she doesn't do much for them. She is another player who thinks she can shoot but rarely do they go in. She plays out of control a fair amount as well.
She's really inconsistent as a jump shooter, but she had a couple of crafty big baskets in the second half when we needed them. Basically Jan will have to balance minutes for Kylie/McCabe. Kylie gives you solid defense, a plus rebounder for a guard, and she's a disrupter. She'll lead the team in steals. McCabe is a lights out 3 point shooter at over 50% on the year, but she must be open to get her shot off. She can't get her own shot, and can be bullied on defense and on the boards.

Good win, Offensively a work in progress recalibrating with life without Caitlin but a lot of solid pieces to work with, I think we will see continued improvement, Syd needs time, Freshman getting valuable experience early is a big plus. The obvious emphasis on improving the defense is really nice to see, Effort and intensity are apparent.

She is an inconsistent jump shooter, but as we saw, she really can get to the rim with either hand. She’s Uber quick, shes a tenacious defender. She has a knack for drawing charges. She is a plus rebounder for a guard, she rarely turns the ball over and she sees the floor well.

All last year people wondered why McCabe didn’t play more, and here we are a year removed and she really hasn’t improved any of the things that keep her off the floor. Yes she’s a great shooter, but that’s pretty much it. Didn’t I hear last game? She’s only had like two or three, 2 pointers made in the last two years?

Jan is doing a great job of setting this team up to win now with a tough, gritty defense and floor game. And at the same time she's letting the freshmen and inexperienced players make mistakes and grow. I love that she's not putting pressure on her players and they are responding. It's "let's just win - the magic will come when it comes."

I was a little disappointed that we couldn't really seem to give Kansas the "knockout blow." All the same, we were in control through almost all the game. To Kansas's credit ... they responded and played us toe-to-toe for 3 of the 4 quarters.

Not unlike Gabby last year ... Kylie's shot is a bit inconsistent. Furthermore, it still looks like Syd is knocking off rust and building team-chemistry with the rest of the ladies. If Syd can consistently play to the form she did in the tournament last year ... then I'd surmise that this team has the potential to be genuinely good. If not ... we're going to be highly dependent on the level of improvement made by our freshmen.

Meh…I don’t think we are that thin. There is of course the concern of a super long season for the frosh 🤷‍♂️ they do sometimes fade late season, but Afolter is a dawg. Feurbach is a gamer. We need McCabe to do enough to sustain being on the floor more. But Olsen & Stuelke will be tough to handle all year. I’m still wait and see until the Big 10 on Addy but her strength has definitely improved. ISUs interior game will be a good test.

Elle Evans, # 21 for Kansas, is from Edwardsville Illinois, by way of NDSU. Her bio lists Kate Martin as her biggest role model. Iowa could use someone like her.

McCabe still needs to be the sharpshooter who she is ... but she also needs to continue to grow her game beyond just being a "role player." She's still a little bit of a defensive liability ... and she's could use to be able to further develop her ability to create her own shot.

I like our bigs ... I think that Jan does too. I think that the collective game of O'Grady, Heiden, and Stuelke have the potential to force opposing Ds to collapse down and clog the lane. When opposing Ds do that ... will are "sharp-shooters" on the outside be able to take advantage? That certainly seems to be Dan's concern ... and, quite honestly, he's not wrong there. Of course, that said ... I think that our ability to score in the paint might make us seem a little bit like a throwback team this year. However, where we need to be careful is that the analytics aren't in our favor if we cannot be more efficient in getting our points in the paint.

The offshoot of all this ... is that our defensive play seems upgraded as compared to seasons past ...

Kind of a weird game.. kept hoping Iowa would extend the lead over 20, but we couldn’t get it there. At the same time we never let it get below 10. The lead just sat there in the 10-18 point window. So good on Iowa answering every mini run.

Olsen had a big spurt there and I was hoping she’d take over and get like 25 points, like Jan said she’s trying to fit in so well she’s holding back a little. Outside our two double digit point scorers(Stuelke and Olsen) everyone else was kind of balanced.

Affolter with the team low of 2.. hoping she’ll find her grove.. be nice to get her some open looks for 3 since she hit them so well late last year. Olsen hitting multiple 3s was nice and McCabe had 2 as well plus she swished another that was taken away on a moving screen.

Feuerbach a little off from deep. I was disappointed for her when that last one rattled out, thought it was in. Her 2 drives to the rim were huge in the 4th to keep our lead at double digits..Also nice to see Stremlow bury one from deep.

Let’s get the W on Sunday so we can be ranked 26th again!!
