*****Washington St vs Iowa Game Thread*****

3s from Olsen will come in spurts. I am not counting on Feurbach, she does the other things. Afolter, Mallengini & McCabe are who I’m counting on. That’s why I’ve been hard on McCabe and why I was so excited today.

She honestly played terrific. She can’t be a liability or even a “meh” and consistently be on the floor. If she keep up the moving, rebounding, passing, she’ll have multiple games where she makes 4-6.

I’ve been wait & see on this team… But I did not expect their defense to improve this much. I am very high on them right now. After seeing her past stat lines, I knew Olson was not going to be a volume three-point shooter. But I did not expect her to be automatic from 15 foot in.
Thats her game. Think about her averaging 23 points per game last season, ad I think she only shot 40-50 threes' the whole season. Thats hard to do. She's a bucket in the lane, and crafty going to the hoop. Even more excited to see her averaging around 6 assists and 6 boards right now

We will finish top 5 Big 10
Thats a BOLD statement. I like this team, and I think we're just starting to get it together, but this league is STACKED now. 8 teams ranked in the top 25 and Iowa at 26. Yes I think we should be around 20-22 already but there's some really good teams, and adding UCLA, USC ad the others certainly didn't make it any easier. I'd also say we need to take a closer look at the schedule. I thought I saw today that the ONLY team we play a home and home with is Nebraska. If thats the case then who you play at home, and on the road (16 of the others teams you only play once) could make a BIG difference for all the teams on just how their schedule is drawn up....

Iowa’s home and away draw is one I don’t like.

The 3 worst according to Bart Torvik(Iowa currently 18)
Purdue(74), Rutgers(110), and Wisconsin(90) all at home.. would be nice to get those on the road. Then the 2 hardest are at home USC(8) and UCLA(5) probably better to take those on the road and get a team like Mich or Mich st at home instead.. but the big upset at home would be fun.,

Things could change since it’s early but
Home
74- Purdue
14- Maryland
24- Indiana
35- Nebraska
152- NW
8- USC
110- Rutgers
5- UCLA
90- Wisc

Road
23- Mich St
38- Penn St
28- Illinois
26- Oregon
42- Washington
37- Minny
35- Neb
10- tOSU
33- Mich

Washington at 42 is the easiest road game.. that could change with Potts injury for Neb and Braun injury for Minny

I was not able to watch the game. I just saw that Iowa shot 11% from three and 57% from the line, yet they won by 30. Is Washington St. that bad? Those kinds of numbers will be a problem against good teams.

Yes they will. It is crazy though, in the last 6 quarters we've held the other team to a 4ptQ, a 4ptQ, and a 5ptQ, so three of the last 6 quarters only 4 or 5 points in the last game and a half. Obviously they've missed some open shots as well, but I've never seen anything like that before.

Agreed. IOWA won easily, 72-43.

However:

* 42% overall shooting. Yikes.

* 12% from three. Yikes.

* 9 missed FTs. Yikes.

Iowa is a good team but they have a lot to work on.

How Iowa got to 72 pts:

2-17 (12%) from 3
27-52 (52%) from 2
..............................................
29-69 (42%) Overall

12-21 (57%) FTs

How WSU got to 43 pts:

7-30 (23%) from 3
10-32 (31%) from 2
..............................................
17-62 (27%) Overall

2-3 (67%) FTs

The offense seems to skew toward finding the open cutters more than finding open looks from 3, as it probably should because they are finding success with that. So they probably need to build from there to figure out where/when they have opportunities to get the ball out for better looks. Looking inside for cutters and post ups means the perimeter is a secondary choice.

Just hard to switch that focus.

Bad free throw shooting game, and a lot of layup misses they can make. They will improve on these.

Meanwhile, we seem to have a Stremlow on the court, a Lucy hitting about anything from 10 ft, and an AOG gaining confidence. Stuelke is figuring out where she can find her game.

They can beat the teams on this next part of the schedule.

We don't seem to be ready to shoot from the three. Too many attemps yesterday seemed to be rushef. Free throw shooting was not good. That is something that can lose a game or two during the season.

Very good passing tram, best defense I've seen in a long time but WASU missed a lot of open threes. It's early but Addie has really improved. Team plays better with Stremlow in the game, she is aggressive and rebounds. Hannah has been solid. This is a better rebounding team.
Hope they keep it going.

Jan thinks the team is really playing tight on offense. Confidence will come with experience and more minutes. Olsen and McCabe experience under pressure showing. Young team, will only get better
