OK, several things here, first and foremost Jan Jensen is not only a good coach. She’s a brave coach….
Without batting an eye, she called for them to burn clock and throw it out to Guyton the wing, a freshman who has only played five games, for a knockdown 3! Wow!
As for Guyton, holy crap can that girl shoot? I had no clue she was that kind of shooter. I thought she was a true point guard. And right now her handles are suspect, and understanding of the offense, but her shooting & defense are spot on.
This was an extremely satisfying game for me, I am an Iowa State fan generally speaking. I know many of you aren’t, but no way in hell was I going to be OK with losing to a team that I know is wildly inferior to us?
On that note, I wanted to beat them by 20, but this game will go a long way to helping us. We stayed right in it, scratched and clawed and put them away in a fantastic fourth quarter.
Coming back to Jan Jensen yes I think she’s a terrific coach, and I think her chemistry with the team and her ability to keep them calm, determined and motivated throughout his remarkable. But the way they locked Crooks down in that fourth quarter makes me feel like she was just letting the game flow up until that point. Which is a bit of an odd strategy to me.
It sounds crazy to say that we let a team shoot 50% from two and 47% from three and yet we played great defense and let me tell you boys. We hounded the hell out of them. This is far away the best defense this basketball team has played since maybe clear back to the Vivian Stringer days.
Emily Ryan, their all big 12 guard. Who in my humble opinion is their only guard that is any good at all, had nine points and nine turnovers!
We started the game 0-9 from three point range and finished 8 for 16. This might’ve been the breakout game we were needing from three-point range.
Finally, we all can be a little critical at times and I’ve been somewhat hard on McCabe, and I have been frustrated with some of the dumbass turnovers by everyone, including Hannah.
But seriously, some of you guys are way too hard on these girls, they play with joy and passion and determination and at the end of the day they all were very important to winning that game.
And Lucy Olsen is an absolute revelation… That girl is a future point guard in the WNBA!
