******Iowa St vs Iowa Game Thread******

And you have to be excited about Syd putting together the game we all know she's capable of consistently doing. I trust this will be the impetus for her to getting back to the significant contributions she made the last half of last year.

- 16 points on 6-11 FG, 3-6 3PT
- 6 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals
- 0 turnovers and disruptive on the floor.

The Hawks would win the leftover league. Already beat 3 of them and no one else in that conference is scary. The Big Ten however will be really challenging for the Hawks. The ladies could really play well and still end up being 6-8th in the conference.

If only Olsen could get a few more to roll in, a few more free throws made, she might have put together back-to-back 30pt games---against very good competition. She's so close to knocking the roof off!

Stuelke knocking down those lob passes and having some fun. Great to see.

Super interesting to see Affolter have a game after her reflective comments post-Tennessee about things being different without Clark. I'd count that as a senior year light coming on.

Stremlow had a nice game.

Guyton's 3 coming out of the timeout was big time clutch. How you win.

And as much as I hated all the missed 3s, Feuerbach was pretty great on defense all night.

Gutsy win because they weren't getting anywhere for the first 3 quarters.

It’s not that. Playing Hannah at the 4 just lets a team sag off and we’re playing 4 on 5.

There is some Truth to that. However Hannah is a 4 and needs to play the 4, except in a time of need, situationally, like tonight. Shell continue to grow into it as the year progresses, but quite frankly I think she’s having a pretty good year. She’s being asked to do a lot more than she used to and sometimes she gets sloppy with the ball.

I’m not all that concerned about her jump shots, though I would like to see her start taking 12 footers.

Size wise she’s a 4, skill wise she’s a 5. She absolutely has to start taking and making shots outside the lane to truly be effective at the 4

I can’t believe Iowa St was down 8 with 45 seconds left and never attempted a 3 the rest of the game, refused to press when coaches were calling for it, and let 14 seconds go off the clock after a basket before they fouled.

They were super fatigued… And remember, they had pretty much been winning the whole game and even got back up by 10 and we just wouldn’t let them sneak away… When we got up by four what happened is what I had really hoped would happen earlier in the game… They would wilt.

And I’m not being catty or petty or disrespectful, but we put them in a meat grinder and as I said to someone else. Their three best players Brown with three and only 19 minutes crooks with four and Emily Ryan with nine had 16 turnovers.

I'm not ragging on KF, and I hope she becomes a scoring threat, but in the first 3 quarters, ISU wasn't even guarding her on the perimeter.

There will be games where Iowa needs points from the "2".
Iowa was just fortunate that for some weird reason, Fennelly kept Brown on the bench for the vast majority of the 3rd quarter. I realize she had three 1st half fouls, but he waited far too long to bring her back into the game and she never got into a groove after that.
The game has passed Fennelly by. He can't make in game adjustments.

Just my opinion, but while fronting her helped for sure...if it wasn't for the hustle and athleticism of the "fronter", Stuelke, she(Crooks) still would have been dumping in shot after shot. In other words...they could have fronted her with other personnel and still not slowed her down, but Stuelke was enough to make it work.

She was definitely battling down there. She's got that dog in her

Just watching this team and these girls, they are still in the CC22’s gonna make a play so we don’t have to mode but that is changing and they are starting to step up and make the plays on defense and offense. It is their team now and they need to make it happen on both ends of the court. Great W by them but want to see them continue to grow and get better as individual players and as a team as the season progresses. Being your intensity and game ladies. Go Hawks.

Did you have them at 9-1 after ten games? This team will continue to improve. Jan will improve. Iowa is going to be a very good basketball team come February. I’m loving the ride they are taking us on this season.

I would like to see Olson and Guyton on the floor at the same time

I thought the game turned when Ava H came in and brought a ton of energy to guarding Crooks. She wore her down a lot and after that, HS defended her with a lot more energy as well. Crooks had nothing in the tank the last 5 min.
Good point.

I loved how aggressive and tough Ava was guarding Crooks. She only played 8 minutes, however.
I thought her picking up that 2nd foul in the 1Q was really bad. It was a silly foul. She came in with energy, and you could tell she could matchup better against Crooks on D. She's just more athletic, and naturally physical, and gets off the ground better then AOG. She just need to learn not to get those early bad fouls to stay on the floor.

She'll figure it out.

The good:
They won!
Feisty defense.
Affolter coming back to life.
Lucy (she needs to be more selfish)
Guyton's shooting.

The bad:
Still a ton of bricks and sloppy play.
Over passing at times.
Stuelke dribbling around.
The idiotic call to upgrade the foul on AOG.

Some things going in the right direction this game but plenty to work on. Guyton needs to play more, besides Lucy she is #2 for me thinking her shot will go in. We need this version of Affolter. KF is a very good defender and occasional scorer but I don't think you can count on her for consistent points. I would like to see Stremlow take some confident shots, she is often open but not even looking. One play we passed up 2 or 3 wide open 3s and then KF shot and missed one with a hand in her face after a restart.

A number of times this year JJ has them hold the ball like it's a last shot of a quarter except it isn't so we run time instead of the offense and then execute poorly often taking a forced shot or not even getting it off in time, then the other team gets the last possession. This needs to end.

Crooks presents a mismatch with her size and touch around the rim on offense but she is a liability in other areas and her even trying to go after a loose ball is painful to watch. She is great where she is great but I'm glad we don't have her because it limits how you have to play.

Lucy: 36 minutes, 0-4 (0%) from three, 9-18 (50%) from two, 7-9 (78%) FTs for 25 pts, 5 assists, 2 steals, 1 rebound

Syd: 30 minutes, 3-6 (50%) from three, 3-5 (60%) from two, 1-2 (50%) FTs for 16 pts, 2 assists, 2 steals, 6 rebounds

Here they are postgame:
