******Iowa St vs Iowa Game Thread******

This years team doesn't have the offensive fire power last years team did...but they're a gritty bunch and fun to watch.

Great come back and W.

They are definitely better defensively than they were last year...
If they made a reasonable number of open 3's they would instantly be much closer offensively, of course, and I am hopeful that they will find their stroke. I think that it is possible.

Now then, to me, the most glaring offensive drop off is that they no longer have an assist machine out there whipping dimes all over the court, particularly on break outs. I am not sure we will ever again see a passer like CC.

Lucy: 36 minutes, 0-4 (0%) from three, 9-18 (50%) from two, 7-9 (78%) FTs for 25 pts, 5 assists, 2 steals, 1 rebound

Syd: 30 minutes, 3-6 (50%) from three, 3-5 (60%) from two, 1-2 (50%) FTs for 16 pts, 2 assists, 2 steals, 6 rebounds

Here they are postgame:

I have to say Affolter's numbers surprise me. It seems like she was missing everything from behind the arc, although she came up big on the end. Didn't seem like she shot 50% from 3, but obviously I am misremembering.

Considering the entirety of women's college basketball and the W have never seen a passer like her before, I think our wait time could be substantial.

It was far from easy for Iowa WBB to earn its ninth-straight home win over Iowa State last night, 75-69.

It took a big fourth quarter, led by a resurgent vet, some tenacious defense, and a pair of fearless freshmen.

Breaking down that big finish:

How did #21 Iowa pull off a 75-69 comeback win over #18 Iowa State?

* Smothering defense when it mattered
* A rapidly-improving freshman class
* Lucy Olsen's best game as a Hawkeye

...and a red-hot CHA crowd, too.

The good:
They won!
Feisty defense.
Affolter coming back to life.
Lucy (she needs to be more selfish)
Guyton's shooting.

The bad:
Still a ton of bricks and sloppy play.
Over passing at times.
Stuelke dribbling around.
The idiotic call to upgrade the foul on AOG.

Some things going in the right direction this game but plenty to work on. Guyton needs to play more, besides Lucy she is #2 for me thinking her shot will go in. We need this version of Affolter. KF is a very good defender and occasional scorer but I don't think you can count on her for consistent points. I would like to see Stremlow take some confident shots, she is often open but not even looking. One play we passed up 2 or 3 wide open 3s and then KF shot and missed one with a hand in her face after a restart.

A number of times this year JJ has them hold the ball like it's a last shot of a quarter except it isn't so we run time instead of the offense and then execute poorly often taking a forced shot or not even getting it off in time, then the other team gets the last possession. This needs to end.

Crooks presents a mismatch with her size and touch around the rim on offense but she is a liability in other areas and her even trying to go after a loose ball is painful to watch. She is great where she is great but I'm glad we don't have her because it limits how you have to play.
I agree w/everything you said except about Crooks. Sure, she limits you in getting up and down the court but would you rather have her or O'Grady? Can you imagine the way we feed the post and how good she is at sealing off her defender how good she would be for us? 31 and 10 and 14-22 from the field last night. Her teammates let her down. And as others have said 35 minutes is way way to much. If she played for us we could get 26 minutes out of her and it would be ideal. She'd still get 20-10 every night. We're not really running or fast breaking at all anymore ( which I don't understand) so she would fit perfectly in our offense.

I'm not ragging on KF, and I hope she becomes a scoring threat, but in the first 3 quarters, ISU wasn't even guarding her on the perimeter.

There will be games where Iowa needs points from the "2".
Iowa was just fortunate that for some weird reason, Fennelly kept Brown on the bench for the vast majority of the 3rd quarter. I realize she had three 1st half fouls, but he waited far too long to bring her back into the game and she never got into a groove after that.
The game has passed Fennelly by. He can't make in game adjustments.
She is not a good 3pt shooter at all. She needs to drive the ball and get fouls. She makes just enough shots to think she is a good shooter. If I am guarding her, I would let her shoot all the 3's she wants. If she starts to hit a couple then I might guard her a little tighter.

Quit being a douche my man. She’s a player.
Were you ok when similar comments were made about Deacon Hill?

Crooks is good, but not a great player. She's got soft hands & a couple decent moves, but most of her scoring comes from simply using her massive size to get position & then simply turns to her right for an easy layup. Teams with decent post defenders can easily limit her effectiveness (AOG too soft; HS gives up too much weight).

And you have to be excited about Syd putting together the game we all know she's capable of consistently doing. I trust this will be the impetus for her to getting back to the significant contributions she made the last half of last year.

- 16 points on 6-11 FG, 3-6 3PT
- 6 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals
- 0 turnovers and disruptive on the floor.
This is the biggest development of last night.
For Iowa to be great they need SA to be who she was last year. This seems to be a major step forward.
Don't misunderstand, the freshmen developing is tantamount to their success, but they need that veteran leadership from Syd.
Sidenote: Guyton and these freshmen are gonna be a big headache for the B1G. If you are gonna get Iowa it better be this year.

First of all why would you bring that up? And no, I didn't love it either. If it was so easy as you say for her to use her massive size why don't more big girls just go out and get 31 and 10 like last night? Or average 20 pts a game. She's massive and she knows how to use it. To compare her to Deacon Hill is also a disservice to her. She can actually play. He cannot. Does her weight limit her effectiveness trying to play 35 minutes a game like last night? Definitely. Would I take her on our team? Definitely.

It's okay to have discussions about her game and how her body size creates strengths and weaknesses. It's the constant name calling and insults that is bad form and frankly boring.

I brought him up because he got a lot of fat jokes & I didn't see you guys getting your panties in a bunch over it.

You're right that she is massive & uses that girth effectively. And the reason more big girls don't play like that is because most with similar BMI couldn't jog the court more than a couple times. I'm sure that offends you, but you know its true.

To be fair, it's hard not to talk about a huge, obese person on a basketball court just like it's hard not to talk about a huge, obese man loading up a plate at Pizza Ranch (or any buffet table).

Obesity, obviously, is simply not good for the health, no matter the age or sex.

For Crooks sake, I hope she doesn't get bigger once her playing days are over.

I'm sure you're very concerned.

If you're cool making fat jokes and thinking people shouldn't be offended that's all good. And keep up w/the lighten up meme's. I"m sure you're a perfect specimen of a man. Oh, again, she poured in 31 pts and got 10 rebounds and single handedly kept them in the game last night.

People said similar things about Shaq. If you're effective, you're effective. She is.

Exactly….some people are so dumb in their arguments. Smart people do the math?

We let a “fat” no talent hack roast us

Meh…. it’s not that hard, then again I wouldn’t be talking about/making fun of the guy at Pizza Ranch either.

Unfortunately, my online persona of screwing with the whiners and complainers proceeds me, but generally speaking I have a lot of love and appreciation for humanity and the struggles “WE” all have.

So no I don’t routinely make fun of people‘s looks

Gutsy win. I thought the key was letting Stuelke guard Crooks, who is a mountain of a woman. If she gets the ball near the basket, it is too late. Crooks has really good hands, but has very limited mobility because of her size. You need to deny her the ball, and Stuelke did an outstanding job of that down the stretch. O'Grady could not guard Crooks. Heiden did a better job. Good that the coaches made the adjustment.

You’re not funny! You seem to think you are but trust me you’re not.
Crooks looks even bigger this year than last. Kind of surprising based on all the access she has to a good training table, exercise regiment, etc.

I think the tendency of many people, is to immediately discount Crooks, but she just plays her game and, like last night, nearly beats you on her own. For three quarters Iowa had no answer.

She wins you over, and eventually she wins your respect. Doesn't hurt that she's a pretty wonderful person.

She more than held her own in last year's tournament--against good players.

*Can you imagine the endorsement opportunities for her if she loses weight and continues to play well? By the time she is a senior she could be a rich young woman.

I have no inside knowledge or track, so I'll say that up front. It seems that's the size they want out of Crooks. 6'3 and take up space. They want her big frame to clog up the lane, set tough screens, and allow the ISU guards to play around her if they can't get it to Crooks herself.

It likely is pretty effective for the D1 league. It won't translate to the W, if that is her ultimate goal, but right now it seems to be the ISU gameplan. If she wants to move on to the W she's going to have to change her body, work on her fadeaway, and learn how to play the 4, because she'll get smoked in the W as a 5.

I would still take O’Grady over Crooks as O’Grady blocks more shots, runs the floor better, and is a better overall passer/team player than Audi. Iowa’s three posts of O’Grady, Heiden, and Stuelke will be just fine for the Hawks.

Simply from a health perspective, I hope she loses some weight…particularly her post playing days. As you mentioned, her body mass won’t help her out in the WNBA as much as it does in college game.
